I job shadowed a vet tech today at the local hospital. Being a vet has always been my dream...

but, I don't want to be a vet anymore. I guess I am more interested in the actual animals than the medical stuff. I just kept yawning the whole time, and I was not interested in looking at slides (even though I did), I was more excited when I was handling animals. I did get to give a shot though, held a gremlin-like pug named Gizmo, and watched a lot of stuff. I guess I am taking a different route in my dream as an editor to a magazine.

You know what? I wanted to be a vet too! I decided that the Dr. I worked for had to work too hard for his money! We saw bulldog calves and parvo pups and stayed late and got really stinky. He still does it...I decided to become a teacher. Now I teach Biology I, Physics, Chemistry, and Anatomy and Physiology. Would you believe that I am thinking again about Vet Med?

I'm glad you had the opportunity to spend time with the vet in this way. From my perspective, for the amount of time they put, the often "bad" hours, and the level of responsibility on their shoulders, it just wouldn't pay me enough to do it.

My vets are cheaper by the hour than I am, and I don't have to be in the barn at 2am unless it is my own horse that is sick. I adore my vets and respect them tremendously. I like them so much both as people and as professionals, and am lucky to have them available. But, it would take a lot more than they charge to get me out of bed to drive across the county in the middle of the night, on weekends, on holidays, etc.

Not only that, but I don't have the heart to cope with the things they must see on a regular basis. The animal half of the tragedies they see would be hard, but the worst would be seeing the owners hurting so bad.
