When I was showing in the APHA most horses that had white pigment around there eye got tattooed or someone would put eyeliner around the eye. I was wondering if miniature people do that to their horses also. Or is it just a paint thing.

Thanks

Never heard of it but at one time there was a theory that doing this reduced the risk of sunburn- I can't see it myself as the pigment remains the same.

Well thats what I thought. We always just used a eye pencil or black eye shadow for ours but now they are saying that its quick just to get it tattooed and not worry about it at every show. Plus it makes it look real.

(it only took 5 minutes for us)......

But I was seeing if the miniature people do it also..

I have a tattoo and I would never want to get one on my eye...OUCH!

No, but I have considered it for my paint mare IF it would help the sunburn problem. She's not even showing anymore, but is turned out 24/7 and we have lots of sun.

The judges (or from what I heard) don't like the white pigment around the eyes. So that is why they do that!

I might be wrong but for AMHR and AMHA wouldn't tattooing color around the eyes be altering the color/markings of the horse and therefore be illegal in the show ring?

I would think so! I would HOPE so!

I feel certain that such a practice would fall under the descriptions of illegal practice in AMHA, and almost as certainly, in AMHR--as it SHOULD!

Personally, I REALLY dislike pink skin around the eyes--and I would shop elsewhere even if I liked EVERYTHING about a horse, and it had this feature-because I'm SURELY not having it tattooed!--(and a big reason I would never keep a cremello. I used to be very partial to frame overos, but have sort of 'slid' back over to more 'classic' tobianos, this being one big reason why!) I have ONE old mare with only partial pink skin around a blue eye, due to the way her bald-face marking lies--as for the sun, she wears a fly mask during the months of strong sun, as much to protect her eye from the sun as from flies. It works quite well.
