We had to board our 3 dogs at a kennel overnight while we drove up for my race...They were there from Friday evening to late Saturday evening. I have boarded there before a few years ago with no problems, but for some reason this time, all the dogs came back with tummy ills...being off on their food and my old MinPin has bad diarrhea.

Is there a people medicine I can give them to calm their tummies? They will need to stay in the kitchen all day today where its not carpeted...poor things! Do you think it was just stress or something going around at the kennel? They of course have been fully vaccinated, but maybe some kind of bug was there?

Hey there Linda

I do hope your babies are feeling better. this is what i do per my vets. you can give them children's pepto break it in half. you also can do canned sweet potatoes and yogurt boil chicken and plain rice make sure you remove the fat off the chicken first. but i would call your vets there is a med that you can get from them to help too hold on i will get you then name of it.

it could be from stress and it could be a bug that is going around at the kennel where you had them. but i would call the vets. you never can tell.

the name of the tablets are ENDOSORB my vet charged around $20.00 for it

but with the children's pepto give it ever 6 to 8 hours

hope this helps out

you can give them 1/2 tab of immodium.....of course, this is what my vet told me when my dogs (12, 14 +10 pounds) all had the same problem last summer. it worked like a charm, only one dose was needed. also, canned pumkin helps.....about a tablespoon to each dog. Not surewhy,m but I had had that work also.

Hope they stop soon, I know how much fun it i picking up little poo squirts around the house.

Fully vaccinated does not translate to full immunity, so the diarrhea and lack of interest in food could be symptoms of "a bug." However, I cannot think of anything that would have such a short incubation period. They could have always caught whatever it might be before being kenneled, though.

They could have also gotten into something, or been fed something that did not agree with them.

And of course stress could definitely be a factor.

I would definitely put a call in to your vet at this point. You don't want your dogs to go too long without eating and having diarrhea, especially the older one.

laughingllama75 - Canned pumpkin generally works to firm up diarrhea or to help a constipated dog go, because like the canned sweet potatoes already mentioned, it is very fiberous.

I brought home some kids immodium and the pumpkin filling and gave that to him....liked the pumpkin..the meds not so much, but I got him to finish most of what I gave him. So, hopefully this will help...If he isn't getting better by tomorrow, I will bring him to the vet.

The other 2 dogs are fine now (they weren't "off" like Gunner is, tho).

I just thought of something else it could be... coccidia and/or giardia.

On my way to take Gunner to the vet...after dosing him with the immodium and giving him pumpkin since yeaterday, he still has the diarrhea.

Will let you know what the vet finds out...

Make sure, should you do the pumpkin thing, that it is NOT the pie filling. The sugar and spices are only going to keep it speeding on through. It must be the plain canned pumpkin. It was the only thing that kept me from putting down my rottie with Wobbler's. I am so grateful that the vet mentioned it as I got a couple more years with my boy.

That said, I hope all is going well at the vet.

Back from vet...He thinks its "infection" (he has some bad teeth...and pulled one that was loose while I was there). He gave me antibiotics and something else to calm his tummy. He also suggested cooked white rice INSTEAD of the pumpkin. He doesn't think its a "bug", but told me to come back in for lab work if he doesnt get better in the next few days with the meds. (Yes, I am going to have his teeth done after he is feeling better, too.)

I do hope your boy is feeling better really soon. It's no fun when our furry friends are sick.

Yay! I think we are finally on the down side of this infection/diarrhea...No squirts for the past 12 hrs!
