Something said on another thread got me wondering - are all donkeys/mules as noisy as Betsy? I know about that sonic blast that we call a bray, but what about those other sounds? When she wants something, she produces soft, zebra-like whinnies, whimpers, grunts, and the ones that always crack me up - long, drawn-out, wavering squeaks like slowly letting air out of a balloon!

Ohhh Yeah....they all seem to be talkative in there own way. I have two jennies who always seem to be on the quiet side, but holy cow~~

let a stranger walk into my pastures, or have a bear or some other wildlife come out of the woods, and you would think I have nothing but a pasture full of loud braying donks. They sure do get loud. :DOH! My hinnies havent really made up there minds about what noise they want to make, so they start out trying to bray, and end up with a whinny.

Clementine she makes the strangest sound out, it sounds like a deep fog horn, but ends up like a train. The boys all have pretty distinct sounds too, and I usually can tell from the house which one is braying, or making there weird sound.

I always have my camers on, and they have sound..one day we had the insurance man over, and he was sitting at the dining room table, trying to convince us to up our insurance, well..out of the back bedroom (which is where my cameras are hooked up into the TV) came the loudest bray from Earl, then my parrots started to scream, (there cage is in the computer room) the poor insurance guy couldnt get out of our house fast enough.

You probably hear it all the time, as I do, people asking, "What in the heck was that??!"

Our farm is the one and only right before you get to a huge resort lake, with tons of ritzy cottages on it, its been said to me that they can hear my donkeys braying down at the cottages ..the lake is about 200 acres from my house, (of which we own 160 acres) ..my theroy is~~ good for them, if they think there going to come up here and relax and have peace and quiet form the city life..my donkeys will tell them differantly.

Ok, aside from the pig squeel that Emily makes to the horse when he approaches the hay pile, I do not hear her....Max starts to wheeze like he's going to bray but that is about all he can muster up. Is it possible that they have me wrapped around their little hooves????

They have hay brought to them before they ask, or the horse starts to knock at the gate...Emily used to bray when she first moved in, but after Max moved in

If I were to try to feed before Betsy asked, I'd be handing it to her 24/7! I can't feed hay free choice, I'd have goats so fat they couldn't waddle. To say nothing of the shape a certain mule would assume! She gets her first feeding at 7 a.m, yet manages to nag me for it by 6:50. Who needs a watch?

The grass is long gone, so I give them hay several times a day. Result? every time I go outside, if I look at the pen, there are two ears like twin exclaimation points following my every move. She "sings" for her food as I carry it into the pen. When I feed the chickens, she begs for a handful of scratch grain (did someone say "spoiled?") If I could teach her to do all these different sounds on cue, we'd have quite an act!

LOL Hershey bray sounded like a dying cow until 2 months ago now it is starting to sound like a bray and he goes off about every hour all night long and when he hears cars pull up in the driveway- I think thats his warning to any potential intruders LOL- and most people had no idea what the hideous sound was coming from the barn- it was way to funny!
