Does anyone do this. I do. I have a ? would it be safe for foals that are 3-4 months old. Or should I do a single dose? In the past my foals were older and thier was no problem.

Thanks

I'm not sure about foals. In case it's helpful, I don't use strongid for it but do use an Ivermectin "Gold" product for in case of tapes.

Do you use Gold on the foals, too? My vet is comming out is Sept but I was just curious. Is Ivermectin "Gold" called Also, Zimecterin? I also heard Equi Max was good. Safe on foals. Have you tried it?

Do you worm every 8 wks? I do every 8 wks but another vet suggested 12 wks. I think that is too far between.

I do not know about foals and the "gold" ivermectin, zimectrin and equimax (all the same active ingredients but in different concentrates).

For my weanlings-18mos old, I deworm with ivermectin every month. For my adults, I deworm with ivermectin every 6-8weeks. In the spring, I deworm with a "gold" product.

If I had sucklings to deworm, I'd just call the vet and ask if the gold is okay, or should I use Safeguard / Strongid, etc.

I have used Praziquantel (active ingredient for Tapeworms) on a six week old foal- Vet checked OK to do so.

We do this every year and have reduced colic to zero. Another worm it works on according to our vet is encysted strongyles, which had been causing us some colic problems in one of our minis. Since we started that program, he never colicked again.

Do what every year? Double dose of Strondig??

I always double dose strongid especially on the babies spring and fall and sometimes inbetween that too

I also use Equimax (regular dosage)

Thanks. I was worried if they would be too young. Do you rec double dose of strondig or the equimax for the foals?

Yes I use the double dose of pyrantel too, never had any trouble with it.

I do not use the combo wormers cause I feel it might make worms resistant to both ingredients at the same time so I´s rather use pyrantel on is own and not an ivermec/prazquantel combination.

I work at a vet and my boss says that a TRIPLE dose will kill tapes..... I would rather just use Gold or Equimax. After you deworm, your horse is only worm free for 6 weeks..... 12 is too long 8 is better but every 6 weeks is the best for deworming.

Ivermectin lasts eight weeks- BUT check on your area- there could be some resistance building up.

I do not use Pyrantel- and Praziquantel does NOT kill encysteds- it is the combo Moxidectin + Praziquantel that your Vet is thinking of and that is a No No for Minis.

I can get Praziquantel on it's own and so I does singly- although I do it at the same time as Ivermectin- it is just that I control the amount of Praziquantel the horse gets.

I have not seen it offered on it's own in the states.

I do not use Pyrantel simply because I do not trust anything you have to "double dose" especially as we now hear some Vets are saying TRIPLE dose- Praziquantel gets them in one.

Do NOT use the combi Equimax/Zimectrin Gold etc more than twice a year or you will help build resistance to the drug.

All you need to do is a Combi twice a year at most, Praziquantel based make sure you do not use Pramox as it is moxidectin based.
