I've been using the Laube CX blades & like them, but had been planning to buy the ceramic GCX blades this time around, since they're supposed to stay sharp even longer than the CX ones. They'd been priced at just $18 at Schneiders too. Well wouldn't you know, Schneiders has now discontinued those blades--they still have some 15 blades, but the 10s are all sold out. As well, the price has now jumped to $30.95 I was thinking I'd just stick with the CX blades, but then I came across the dura Edge blades at horse.com and wondered if they were a better buy.

Or how about the Oster Cryogen-X-AG Elite blades, $32.95 at Schneiders? are they better than ordinary Oster blades? As good, or better, than the Laube ceramic blades?

I think I've used every brand of blade out there. I've tried the "good buys" and the more expensive type. Laube's, by far, are my favorite and are worth the $. They stay sharper longer then any other brand I have. I haven't used the Ceramic ones by Laube, but love my CX ones. I know of 2 people who have used the Dura Edge blades. One hated them and the other liked them. But, the one who hated them came from using Laube blades. The one who liked them came from using a different brand of blade which doesn't clip as well as the Laubes.

WE had previously used the steel only blades and it took 5 to do 1 clean horse. Then we switched to the ceramic and could clip without track marks 6 horses with 1 blade. This year we didnt get the ceramic before deciding to clip for the fair, again 3 horses clipped and we used 10 blades! 6 of which were brand new. We are going back to the ceramic with my double K. It needed overhauling and we had to use the hand held oster A 5s

Wow, what brand of steel blades were you using Lyn? Last summer when I clipped for our June show, I clipped dirty horses and used one blade per horse--and still had some blade left for more clipping if I cleaned it good. I was using the Laube CX blades. I'm disappointed that Schneiders no longer has the GCX blades available, as I was really looking forward to trying them....on clean horses. I do have to start bathing horses before I clip--at at least I need to vacuum them first; I'm told even vacuuming really helps save on blades.

I know the Andis blades I bought when I first got my Double Ks wouldn't take much clipping on a dirty horse--the Laubes outperform them, WAAAY outperform them! For that reason I'm reluctant to pay more money for the Oster Elite blades--I'm afraid that they won't perform as well as the Laube CXs.

I think I'll just go with the CX blades again & call it good. I know they're good, and the price is still right.

the ones that Oster makes, bought 4 at the tractor supply and 3 more at Sally Barber and beauty.

We use the dura edge titanium ceramic blades. I love them for the first few clips, then they get hot fast. They will cut forever. They stay sharp, but like I said, after a few clips they get hot really fast. The clipper guy in Fort Worth at the world show recommended the Andis ceramic blades, and those are what I intend on trying for next year.

I do think that ceramic blades clip better and cleaner than any steel blade out there, no matter what the brand.

But is it true that you cannot sharpen ceramic blades?

If so, once they finally get dull and are used up, are they just thrown away?

No that is not true. You need a special piece of equipment and some sharpening people have it, and some don't. They may say they can't do it, but that doesn't mean nobody can it. The Fort Worth clipper shaver guy has the right equipment to do it.

Thanks Matt!

That is good news :) I'd love to try some.

Lyn, I primarily use Oster blades and I can clip a dirty horse with one blade without problems. I'd say you had something else going on.
