I have used Wilkens Livestock Insurers for many years, and have been happy with them. For basic mortality and theft, you also get a "free" colic surgery rider covering up to 1/2 of your insured amount, so if you're insuring a 5,000 horse, then 2,500 worth of colic surgery. When I've had major medical in the past, the deductable wasn't paricularly high, like $150, they covered everything after that point. It doesn't cover checkups, shots or wormings, but pretty much everything else. Many of the insurer's are charging 3.2-3.4 percent of insured value for the mortality/theft policy. For a 10,000 horse, that would only be 320-340 annually. Wilken's does have a minimum policy value of $6,000 I believe, but I'm sure other companies will write policies for smaller amounts. So, in my opinion, if it would hurt you financially to have to replace your 6,500 show gelding, then insure him, it will take you 4 1/2 years to even break the $1,000 mark in premiums.
