We have always self insured and thus far we are thousands of dollars ahead. Unless you are talking about horses valued in the five and six figure range you are better off without coverage. Health coverage does not pay for routine checkups, wormings, vaccinations etc and on surgical procedures the co-pay is so high that it does not come close to making it a break even procedure. For example on an 800.00 procedure the copay was four hundred dollars and the insurance paid sixty percent of the difference. The premium itself would have more than paid for the procedure and all of the routine care. I am sure you will have others who have been saved by it. It was just never a viable option for us.

I have used Wilkens Livestock Insurers for many years, and have been happy with them. For basic mortality and theft, you also get a "free" colic surgery rider covering up to 1/2 of your insured amount, so if you're insuring a 5,000 horse, then 2,500 worth of colic surgery. When I've had major medical in the past, the deductable wasn't paricularly high, like $150, they covered everything after that point. It doesn't cover checkups, shots or wormings, but pretty much everything else. Many of the insurer's are charging 3.2-3.4 percent of insured value for the mortality/theft policy. For a 10,000 horse, that would only be 320-340 annually. Wilken's does have a minimum policy value of $6,000 I believe, but I'm sure other companies will write policies for smaller amounts. So, in my opinion, if it would hurt you financially to have to replace your 6,500 show gelding, then insure him, it will take you 4 1/2 years to even break the $1,000 mark in premiums.

We've used Conaway in the past for our show animals......no complaints.

Connaway & Assoc. have an toll free number:

800-269-5458

Their rates run between 2.9 to 3% of value, last we checked. They also did not require a vet inspection for a horse valued under $15,000. Again, this was a couple of years ago when we last did business with them.

And just for the record, Laura Connaway is a mini owner, which I thought was nice.

I have used Agri-Risk for years, and have been satisfied, but then, I have not had reason to have a claim, either, just dealt with new accounts and renewal, etc.

Well, I unfortunately had a lot of claims experience this year with Ally's dystocia and subsequent illness. I had her covered for mortality and major medical. I use Eve Willett (1-800-jogtrot or http://www.jogtrot.com) and had NO problems collecting on my claims. It was painless and smooth. After my initial $250 deductible, they covered 100% of everything except for a few farm calls, which admittedly were at the emergency rate. It gave me great peace of mind to be able to say, do whatever you need to do without having to worry about the cost. Her baby was another story completely, and cost me $4000 + before she died.
