I know this is going to be silly, but I can't find it anywhere:

At about what age should a weanling's eyes turn from 'baby blue' to their final color? My filly has an eye color like none I've really seen in a horse, it's perplexing. It even had the vet checking her for possible problems or vision loss. It's almost like she never lost her baby color, but she's only 8 months (and 8 days lol) old so is there a chance that their final color has not come in?

They almost appear brown in shadows but when you get her in the sun, or shine light upon them, they are a greyish slightly blue color

. I can maybe dig up a picture to post if that would help

Ok,here it comes. It's a really big file (from a really awesome camera) But it shows alot of the color of her eyes. This is from the summer but her eyes have stayed that exact color since then. Make sure you expand the picture all the way by clicking the link, you can't see the color otherwise.

If it's too big for some people let me know and I'll crop it to just detail of the eye <3

Hard to tell by the photo. I think you would need to do a close up of the eye. But from that phto the eye looks normal. And at that age the color should be set.

I don't know when they "should" change, but Jelly Bean had the same color eyes when I got her at 14 months. Now I think they are brown. I don't know when exactly they changed but It was after 3 yrs old. Strange.

Alright I cropped it down to just the eye and blew it up a couple of times. You should be able to see it pretty clearly without having to expand this. Hope it helps <3

And candycar, that's interesting. I wonder if I'll have to wait a similar ammount of time? I always assumed they were set at a couple of months old.

I will say I have had one colt have smokey grey eyes. They never changed color. As long as the lens is clear.

Yep, lens is all clear. The tech was surprised by the color when she and the vet came for spring shots and insisted the vet give her a full eye exam. She came up clear, just a funny color.

I guess this is going to be her eye color, I wonder what causes this in eyes. Typically a variation in eye color is from a color gene (ie: green eyes in a champagne, blue in a cream, amber in a cream dilution), but she appears to be a normal graying-out black.

I have a mare that is 3.5 years old, she has the same color eyes are your filly.
Good to know, which of your mares is it? Im just curious to think on it now and see if it's maybe color related. My baby is still trying to figure out what color she is off course so she won't help, just something I wanted to ponder
