What color do foals have at about 3 weeks? My little girl has I believe blue eyes. If she does what does that mean? also think she is getting mottling (sp) on her lips.

I have found that if a foal has med-dark blue eyes then that means they will end up brown. They seem to only keep the blue if they are crystal blue and even then sometimes they'll only end up with partial (this seems to happen mostly with my sabinos).

Oops forgot to add that there seems to be differing opinions as to what causes blue eyes, but I believe splash and sabino do. Some say only splash though.

If the filly has true blue eyes then either the sire or dam must have splash or maybe sabino. Both can show very minimal characteristics like a star or a snip or a bit of roaning. I have a minimal tobiano pinto stallion who only has socks and then has a bit of roaning above one. He produces loud tobiano and sabino foals out of solid mares.

LWO+ also causes blue eyes. Some horses show little to no facial white and can still have blue eyes from the overo gene.

I'm in the group that believes blue eyes come from either LWO or splash--not from sabino. However, that is the ice blue eyes.

If you are meaning the darker blue eyes, then that is another thing. There are some horses that have dark blue eyes--as foals their eyes are obviously blue, but they are not the ice blue of a frame or splash. As the foal gets older the eyes darken up to a very dark blue--you have to look very closely to see that the eye is actually a deep indigo shade of blue and not the ordinary dark brown that most horses' eyes seem to be.

Those are just plain blue eyes that will turn much darker as she gets older.

The blue eyes that are associated with the frame and splash genes are a very light blue, almost white...I don't think I have a photo that is close up enough to show the coloring on my blue eyed pony so can't post one as an example.

Our filly's eyes were a simular color. She's a year old now and they're very dark, not so much brown, but closer to black. You'd never guess they were a blue color unless you looked up close. This isn't a great picture, but you can tell they are blue.

Only ice blue eyes stay blue usually. They're unmistakeable when you see them.

Because some foals are born with darker colored eyes. I've had some that were brown/hazel and some that were the blue shade same as what is shown on this foal in your photos. As they darken they look less blue; some may turn burn as said earlier, others I believe do stay blue but they are such a dark blue you have to look really close at them to see that they aren't brown.

If you have the true crystal blue eyes associated with splash or frame they are obviously much lighter, and they may even lighten up more as the foal gets a little older. People used to call them wall eyes, and many people didn't want them because they were considered "wild" and undesirable. In some breeds, like Morgans, the blue eyes were not allowed--blue eyes automatically excluded the foal from the registry. A foal with eyes the color of your foal's eyes were not discriminated against--because those eyes turn dark and are not an indication of any pinto gene. (Morgans are now allowed to be registered even if they have high white and/or "blue" eyes.)

I am not crazy about the light eyes either that is why I was wondering and didn't know if appys have blue eyes as I think this girl is getting the mottling (sp) on her lips. What do you think?
