If you read my other post about our "new fishing boat" you know the Casino is a bit of a fixer-upper and Martin had all of about three days to get her ready for the crab opener Dec. 1.
Well, she hadn't left the dock in a year and a half, and she has a lot of green sludge growing all over her light blue self. Most of that is gone, the rotted off exhaust has been repaired, etc. etc.
I was all set to go rent a movie to wait out the last six hours, when I got a phone call to run to Englund Marine and buy a specific sodium bulb so that they had a bright light to run gear with in the dark (since the season starts at midnight). Of course, they did not have it in stock, so had to wait for the runner to bring one over from Ilwaco. Meantime, I drove over to the local machine shop and picked up a clamp for the exhaust, and back to Englund Marine then grab some dinner at a restaurant near the basin (all the while the two youngest boys are in tow), and back to the boat. It won't start!
So back to the store to buy a battery charger and groceries for the trip. The trip that MAY not happen.
All the other boats are all ready and everyone's scurrying around the parking lot. Easy to get run over by an errant Hyster on this day.
Martin's home for a bath and a quick nap before he goes again to see if the boat will start at midnight. It will have been charging for a few hours by then. The batteries are just too old to get it going. Probably doesn't help that it's 30 degrees.
One of the crew members had a little car accident today w/his dad's truck and Martin was driving that truck home so that I would have ours. Well, he got pulled over b/c the tail light is out and showing white to the rear (got broken in the accident).
So far, all's going as expected in that nothing's going the way it's supposed to.
Even the bait got put in the freezer (forty degrees below zero, no way it will thaw out in time to use it tomorrow morning) rather than the "cooler" which is more of a refrigerator in the 30-something degree range).
Yesterday, Terry, the other deckhand got his right hand crushed while they were out on the dump boat putting pots out. Luckily it was not broken, but he's working in a wrap/brace. I am very glad he was not badly maimed, but what a way to start the season. Or wait, it hasn't even gotten started, yet!
I should have a couple new photos and sorry if this all seems like "greek" it's been a LONG day and all of this stuff should have been done months ago. If only we'd had the chance to DO it then.
