So we were sitting down to dinner, when we get a call from my horse trainer... "I am assuiming you know about the fire"

And my whole family is like what fire, and we look out our dinning room doors, and 3 or so miles away on the hilltop is this HUGE orange blaze. Its pretty windy outside, and although the fire dept seems to have a handle on it, we are worried about needing to evacuate. So far it has been disappearing, but then it will come back in 10 min or so. If we do need to leave, we don't have enough trailer space to take my horses, all the alpacas and llamas, and the goats, as well as all the house pets.

Please pray for us that we don't have to evacuate the house. We can't see it right now, but thought that 20 min ago, and then it had come back just as big.

Oh, nevermind on that, I can faintly see the orange glow. :new_shocked: :new_shocked:

Is there any out of danger that you know who has a truck and trailer you can beg for help from in a pinch???

If so, I'd call and line them up to be on alert.

You will be in my thoughts tonight.....please post with an update, when you have news.

Still can't see it, been quite a while. I hope they have it under control.

Yes, we do have people we can call in a pinch, and we can also pack the animals to an extreme. Just a scary though. People have been called, and are on alert. I hope we don't have to use them.

If by chance I can't get transport for my horses, would it be best to glue a paper or something to their woolies with information and such, and turn them loose in a feild ((full of dirt feild))

Just got a new update

Its NOT contained, and has so far taken at least 50 acres, and is between two roads, luckily leading from our house. But still NOT contained. I am freaking out! I really don't want this to turn bad.

ummmm i wouldnt turn them loose in a field first of all.

Why couldnt you make room?

If we had a fire coming out way, the horses would be the first ones going with us.

Oh Jamie I hope everything turns out already. I would take a piece of paper and put your information on it taping it securely to their halter. However, I would shove your horses into the trailer before the llamas

I don't know if many people here know this, but my horses aren't the only livestock here on my farm.

My mom owns Luna Nueva Ranch

and we breed alpacas and pygora goats ((ok, so the goats are mine, hence Baaababy... yea, I am Baaababy Pygoras))

Alpacas are NOT cheap livestock. Even the cheapest female is at LEAST 9 thousand dollars! My mom will try and take all of her alpacas, before she takes my horses. I know it sounds cruel, but I am kinda on her side with that, although I do NOT like those things, and I love my horses. We have 13 alpacas, and 2 llamas, 12 pygora goats ((studs, and breedable females)) and then my horses, and the dogs and cats and such))

You never told me you breed goats!

Just keep on your toes Jamie, just in case. You are doing good just by having some people ready nearby to help.

Dogs and cats etc can fit into your truck/car. Probably could fit some goats in the car too.

Oh gosh--your making me a nervous wreck just reading this! If I were you and the fire was only 3 miles from my house and not contained..I would be moving my animals already! Definitely ID your animals with permanent ink and put it in a ziplock snack bag and attach it to the halter.(or use suitcase tags) OH PLEASE be safe and let us know how things are going! Now I will never sleep tonight, I will be thinking and praying everything goes well by you. PLEASE keep yourself and animals SAFE. Corinne

Please be careful and I truly hope they get the fire contained before it heads closer to you all.

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time, and please, please keep us

posted.

Fire anytime is very scarey hope it doesn't reach your place. l wouldn't know what to do either if fire raced across out here our trailer only holds 10 minis in a pinch and we have over 40 right now. l always thought l would halter and tag them then set them loose if worse came to worse. l wish you and yours luck in staying safe.

That fire would be too close for comfort as far as I was concerned, and my animals would be in the process of being moved as soon as I seen flames! We have 40 minis, 6 full size, plus angus..getting the angus trailered would be the biggest problem..but somehow they would be moved too, our dogs and cats would be in the trucks, right along with the birds...dont know where we wold go but we'd be going!

: Beautiful picture but still its a fire out of control. Again, please be safe! Corinne

if it were ME...i'd let the horses go FREE.. i WOULDN'T put them in a contained area dirt or no dirt. I"d give them a fair shot at escaping themselves!! Don't forget that smoke is toxic and will suffocate them as well as burn lungs even if they are on dirt and no fire getting to them. i would worry about finding the horses AFTER the fire is over.. i think i'd want to give them a fair shot at saving their own lives even if i couldn't save them myself!!! I agree with some others..i think as soon as i heard it was so close i'd be working on moving horses out. Yes it's time and expense..but it would be worth it to me to have a false alarm and have the animals OUT of there than to loose them all or not be able to get them all out because you have no time. I've seen how fast grass fires can spread and it wouldn't be anything i'd want to mess with! be safe and please let us know how it all ends!

New Update...

Fire has spread to 150 or so acres... we arent evactuating yet. We have the plan for what we will do and such, and the wind is picking up. I am NOT going to sleep tonight. I hope we have no school.

Take care and don't hesitate if you do have to evacuate, we'll be thinking about you!

As for the horses any way you can mark them, glued paper with your info, tags on halters, permanant marker on the hooves, even spray paint on thier sides if you have to. I also would turn them out in the safest area or turn them loose.

Keep safe!

Your best defense against fire is to be prepared. Do you have an escape plan drawn up for you and your animals? Do you have hoses set, shovels ready, towels on hand, spray paint, cell phone charged, the list could go on but I'll stop here. I have all my halters with leads attached on my patio in case I have to move any horses fast. I chose a pen with the least amount of trees and no grass as my holding pen in case I can't get out. My pens are wire so they will not burn. I have water in the pen with a hose so I could water my minis down if need be. I also have a metal barn but that would be my last resort. Please be careful and stay calm (as hard as it is).

Hope you don't have to evacuate and the fire goes past you.

Fire is soooo scary! Spray paint your phone # on the sides of your animals. Halters can get hung up or removed. I'm not sure if anyone would think to look at hooves. My prayers are with you. If you have any big barrels fill them with water and then keep rags/towels in them. Good for beating out flames or wraping around scared animals eyes. Fires can spread so quickly in desert areas, I lived in a town that got half wiped out by a fire.....it went so fast that people didn't have a chance to evac. Many people and animals were killed....some because spectators clogged up the roads and people couldn't get out. Good Luck....and have a plan!
