As many of you know,I work with Equine Rescue. There are hundreds of burned horses in the Panhandle of Texas. These ranch owners are looking for any type of home remedies to help these animals. The cattle are just being sent to slaughter, and many of the horses are being killed, just because of lack of any other options. I am getting a list of things they can use that they can go to a local pharmacy or walmart to help these horses. They are mostly burned on legs, feet, udders ( Foals now cannot nurse) eyes, and are coming down with pneumonia. It has now snowed there, which are making things worse.

Are there any mini farms there? I know there are minis involved, too. I need to know if there are any specific farms ya'll know about in that area. There are 8 counties involved so far.

thanks for any help you can give. I know neosporin can be used for many things, but does anyone know of any pain medications? Aloe would be good for the burns. Any help will be so very appreciated.

The people seem fine so far, they may have lost their houses, but are currently concerned about their horses.

I don't know how to help, except that I don't think any type of OIL should be put on burns. Check with the vet for a Silvadene cream which is good for burns, or maybe check about furacin cream.

MY prayers are with you all.

All the vets are doing up there is passing out meds, and are not giving any instruction, or anything. Plus most of these people are rural, trailers are burned, and they cannot get the horses to any vets. Silvadene is also a great thing for burns. I am unsure how they can even get to a Walmart, but they are determined people.

I am fortunate to be out of this path, but, I will help any way I can. Thanks in advance for any who respond.

Wish I could help you........The only thing Larry and I could think of was applying a topical ointment and giving them Banamine for pain. I am so sorry........

I am so sorry to hear this too. Although I live in Texas as do many others, the panhandle is a very long ways from me. Sorta like going to another state or two taking many many hours to get there. I too cannot help by going there but would take some mini mares/foals here for care if they can be delivered to me. I am currently working and in school so have limited time off.

And I am sure Hico is a long way for me. The Panhandle is 8-10 hours for me. I am hoping everyone reading this will check on any farms in that area. Texas is just a very vast state. Banamine, along with bute are on their needs list. We are trying to get some sent up there.

again, thanks

Years ago my Arab burnt his nose - his whole muzzle literally looked like a black burnt steak. The vet had me put Fura-Zone Ointment (Dressing) on it. I remember putting it on rather heavy (probably 1/4 inch thick) but never had to bandage and it never got infected. His muzzle was in very bad shape but it healed up nicely - he has some scarring and a lump in his lower lip and his eye lashes now grow in any direction but straight. Also gave him bute - but remember he's a big horse.

Hope this helps - and I wish everyone - animal and people alike - the best.

Pam

Check out this web site. Just went to an open house & the rep said some mini's in Texas were being treated for dog bites with this product also. See the before & after pictures of a horse that was treated with a bad burn here ( warning - graphic picture) One product name is Eclipse & they have the ointment & other meds also with aloe.

Just some ideas from a book I have, for immediate home remedies (good for both humans and animals).

1.) Make a thick paste of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and water, apply to the burn and cover with a wet gauze for ten minutes at a time.

2.) Make a paste from equal parts Original Pancake Syrup and flour. Apply the mixture to burn and cover with wet gauze for ten minutes to alleviate burning sensations.

3.) Saturate a washcloth or sponge with Condensed Milk, and apply to burn as a compress to relieve the pain and prevent blistering.

4.) Spread a dollop of Colgate Regular Flavor Toothpaste on skin immediately after burning, let dry and leave on for several hours to prevent blistering and speed up healing. (Toothpaste protects the skin from exposure to oxygen - lessening the burning pain almost immediately, and dries the skin preventing liquid from building up under the skin.

5.) Apply Cool Whip to minor burns, Let sit for fifteen minutes, then wash off with cool water.

6.) Relieve first degree burns with Desitin. It sooths the burning pain.

7.) Apply Aloe Vera gel over the burned skin. It is an analgestic that helps soothe the burning sensation.

8.) Apply White Vinegar to a burn to soothe the pain.

9.) To relieve the burn, pour Soy Sauce over the affected area.

10.) Apply wet tea bags directly to the burn or secure in place with gauze. The Tannic acid relieves the burning sensation.

11.) Applying Noxzema skin cream soothes the pain and prevents the skin from blistering.

12.) Orajel helps numb the pain and prevents blistering.

13.) Preperation H relieves burning and prevents blistering. Cover with a sterile bandage to keep moist.

14.) Apply Concord Grape Jelly to minor burns to relieve pain. The jelly moistens and cools the skin, while the tannic acid from the grapes soothes the pain.

15.) Apply Honey to speed healing. Honey is a hygroscpic and absorbs water, creating an environment in which disease-producing microorganisms, deprived of miosture cannot live.

16.) Apply Vaseline to help speed healing.

17.) Apply Vicks vapor Rub to make the pain subside within minutes.

18.) Apply Bagbom to cracked or dried teats.

Newbie25,

Great suggestions! I've cut and pasted and saved your list for our records.....

I knew about a couple of items, but there's a lot I'd never heard of!

Thank you!

Perhaps you could contact Lone Star Equine Rescue for some assistance? I know their resources are pretty tapped right now with all they did for Hurricanine relief; but just an idea.

I'm in Houston, so too far to physcially help; but LSER may have contacts in the panhandle.

I just feel so bad for all those horses...I wish there WAS some way I could help. I am sure Lone Star is already working with this, as they usually are one of the first to get involved. Corinne

MiniV,

No problem, we bought a home remedy book a few months back and I knew it would come in handy one of these days. I'm just sorry that it had to come in handy for this, what a terrible thing to happen.

Here's some more remedies that I found for blisters.

1.) Apply Listerine to a broken blister to disinfect it.

2.) Vodka (may sting a little) but will disinfect the exposed skin after a blister errupts.

3.) To protect a small blister area, cut a thin Maxi Pad into a doughnut shape and place over blister, leaving the hole over the blister and letting adhesive strip adhere to the skin - may need a self stick tape to help. The pad will protect the blister as it heals.

Also, some other on hand creams

1.) Cortaid

2.) Neosporin

And a couple more remedies for burns

1.) Apply Dannon Yogurt on the burn, let sit for twenty minutes and rinse clean with luke warm water.

2.) Moisten a washcloth with Witch Hazel and apply to the burn.

3.) After soaking area, moist skin with a generous coat of Lubriderm.

4.) To sooth skin, spray Niagara Spray Starch on affected area. The spray sizzles and cools the skin.

5.) Apply Milk of Magnesia, let dry and leave on overnight. It helps keep the skin cool all night and relieves pain.

: Plain old tea [like lipton] made strong is great for even moderate burns. No joke I learned this when I was in nurses raining and mst of the girls went out and got really badly sunburned. The Student health nurse had all the girls soak in strong tea it also works with poltices even use the wet bags directly on the area. Tea has some ofn the same things that burn medicines do. Even cold water helps. nothing with grease because hat just makes the burns go deeper in the tissues.

LOL, I am with Lone Star Equine/Habitat for horses. WE are just looking for more help out there, suggestions mostly. All this info is exactly what we are looking for, thanks so much!!!

oh, I called Melisa, she is in a meeting. thanks for that tip, also!! thanks for everything, everyone!!

Lone Star is an EXCELLENT organization! :aktion033:

They were one of the few rescue organizations that got themselves inside the disaster area of Katrina (along with people from Chances Rescue, as I recall.) It sounded like there was some secrecy involved because of the stupid government buearuacy going on.

:

Both Rescue groups were able to slip in and rescue animals INSPITE of FEMA! :aktion033:

(I sent donations to both! And if I lived closer, I would have physically joined in!)
