I have revised the list a little. Please take a look and let me know what you think. Should there be more added, or something re-worded, etc?

Mystery

Love Story - can be any kind of love (friendship, love for an animal, romance)

Fantasy/Paranormal

Horror/Suspense

Science Fiction

Classic/Historical

Other - includes nonfiction, inspirational, comedy, drama, etc

Would historical fiction (like Phillipa Gregory's books or Forever Amber) be of interest to anyone? They are some of my favorites, but I know they're not everyone's cup of tea. Putting it in the "other" section is fine by me too.

I'm not sure what exactly those books are, but I am sure that as this place gets more popular, there will be people who are interested in them. How about if I combine Historical with Classics? To me, this would sum up books like 'Anne of Green Gables', 'The Wizard of Oz', and 'Pride And Prejudice'.

I'd be up for anything except Fabio type romance and probably would skip classics when that comes up... I think I've already read the ones I wanted to, and a few others that that I "had " to

PS I think Amanda's idea about historical fiction is good, too... I've enjoyed the ones I've read over the years (Désirée, Thornbirds, Gone with the Wind, Dangerous Liaisons, etc.)

Lol! I have a bunch of classics sitting on my shelf, and everytime I start to reach for one, another book calls out to me. I swear one day I will read them!

My biggest problem with genres is what catagory some books would fall into. Like, what would "The Help" fall under? "Other", right?

I hear you!!! Most books can go into a few different catagories. The Help... I'd classify that as a really good book

Maybe like "Chick Lit"? Or Southern Fiction (one of my favorites)...

Kaonos-have you ever seen the movie about King Henry and the Boleyn sisters? It came out a few years ago I believe and is based on Phillipa Gregory's book. She does a lot of research to make the stories as accurate as possible, but makes up the in betweens and personal stories. She is very good! That would be historical fiction-somewhat educational with the drama and love stories added in for us

The ones I've read are all new too so the style of writing is easier to understand than some classics.

Ok, gotcha! I knew what historical fiction was, just didn't recognize the books mentioned.

I think the movie was called "The Other Boleyn Girl" or something like that, with Scarlette Johansen , right? I've always wanted to read The Count Of Monte Cristo, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I think that one could also fit into either "other" or "classics"?

Yep, that's the one! The Count of Monte Cristo is a great one too and would fit under a bunch of categories, which I love because if someone is excited about a book one month and it doesn't get picked, could possibly be thrown into the next

At times. It took me a while to get through it, but I did read it in 9th grade and I can't remember the reason behind it taking so long. It's one I need to reread-all I remember is that I loved it.

I'll read most anything ... you know, other than horror and suspense, LOL!

I like romances, though that seems to be an unpopular choice. ;-)

I'd never read an Urban Fantasy in my life, and my friend suggested I try The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff because it's set in Calgary (where we both live). Really enjoyed it, and just started the sequel.

Last year I saw Jack Whyte speak at a writers conference and was so impressed with him I immediately bought The Skystone, the first book in his Camelot series, just so I'd have something for him to sign. I blew through the whole series by the end of summer, they're historical fiction, again, unlike anything I'd ever read and I enjoyed them so much. Kind of "saving" the rest of his back list, it's always so sad when I run out of books by an author I enjoy!

I guess what I'm getting at is that I'm willing to try anything (that's not too scary hehe) because I'm usually pleasantly surprised when I do branch out of my comfort zone!

I'd like to recommend "Humor", which covers a lot actually... Yesterday, I was looking at Audible at the humor category and found many of my favorite authors / books / series, including:

  • Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books
  • Jonathan Tropper books that have made me laugh out loud (Jewish humor -- such likeable, funny characters and situations!)
  • Fannie Flagg and Mark Childress (southern humor -- ala Fried Green Tomatoes (etc.) / Crazy in Alabama (etc.) -- several real good books by both in addition to the ones that turned into movies)

I know there are others that have sci-fi humor and are very popular. I've never read (like Hitchhikers...), but would if we all were!!!
