Hi, i just wanted to know how old the colts have to be to gelded? I don`t have any as of yet, but was wondering, do you geld before you sell your colts? or do you do a contract to have them gelded?

Thanks,

Tina

I've done it both ways, but my choice is to geld them before they are sold. My vet says 1 month old is not too young as long as all else is fine.

This year I had two gelded,,,,,,,,one at 6 months, and one at 2 months. Both did great! Vet seems to think the younger they are, the better they do,,,,,,but just one persons opinion, and one I agree with.

I want to get other replies. I have one that will definately be gelded. I was going to wait until 4-6 mos. What about the heat? My little guy won't be 1 month until July 7th. If I have to wait until 2 mos, that will be August 7th. :saludando:

We have either gelded in the spring or fall...when the flies are not in the air.

If we feel they need gelded (and almost everything does IMO, as there are way too many stallions and we ADORE geldings!), they are gelded before leaving. That is the only way to know for sure that it will actually happen. See my thread called "Then and Now" (it is currently still on this page) with pictures of my 2 month old gelding.

We have two local vets who will geld the very young foals, but not all will.

I don't like to geld until after the first hard frost, when insects, especially flies, are at a minimum.

The last two I had gelded were yearlings and both did fine, but I think doing it a bit younger is much easier on the horse.

Friends of mine gelded foals as early as in the first week of life and that worked out beautifully - very little trauma and extremely fast healing.
