Just curious what the going price is in your area to have this procedure done. I understand it varies a lot across the country!

Last time I had a crypt done, it was $145, I am in SE Washington State.

Central SD and $75 for a Crypt, $25 for a normal gelding. (Miniature horse prices.)

We paid $125 last year here in MO. However we paid $135 this year for a colt that was fully descended. Go figure!

: Another place here charges $250 for regular and $500+ for crypt.

I think as well as varying from place to place, the price can vary with how difficult the undescended testicle is to get. We had a shetland pony done awhile ago and although it took awhile, the vet was able to reach the undescended one after some searching, so he only charged us the normal gelding fee which was about $200. but we had been warned that if it was really hard to get it would be more. Some vets here won't attempt them at the farm and suggest sendng them to the University vet clinic. That would certainly be a lot more than $200!

I paid a little over $800, which was less than the quote of $1000+. And it was day surgery, dropped off in the am and home in the pm.

Check with your nearest University Vet teaching facility. Ours, if you make the reservation early enough in their teaching year, will do regular geldings for almost free, not sure if they would do the crypt for that or not, but the surgery is done by students under the close supervision of instructors. A good friend of mine had "a bunch" of them done last year, I think she only had to pay a couple of nights worth of board bills. Good results, no problems.

In 2004, I had one done at the vet's clinic. One testicle retained (very high up in the abdomen), one normally removed. It costed $160. His son was done at the same time, but was normally descended and only costed $60. The cryptorchid gelding stayed there 7 days, and the normal one stayed 4 days (not because he needed to, it was just easier the way we did it).

I had been told it would cost me upwards of $800 to have him done other places locally. I think this is a major detractor considering it's very hard to get more than $500-$1000 for even a very nice gelding.

Good luck!

Hard to believe the cheap prices some of you pay for gelding. Gelding is high here in the East.

Nearly 11 years ago, it was around $500 for a true cryptorchid(both retained, though not HIGH in the abdomen.) The only other retained miniature I ever had was gelded, nearly three years ago now, as a three year old, monorchid(I wouldn't wait that long again, not worth it, IMO--heck, the price of doing it was escalating every DAY I was waiting...). The vet's office had quoted a possible cost of as much as $900, should the retained testicle be 'way up high--luckily, it was not far above the inguinal ring, cost was around $250, complete w/ all charges. He stayed overnight, came home the next day, as I recall -and thankfully, I had a buyer who's given him an EXCELLENT home waiting for him, so I at least didn't lose on the deal, though I didn't really 'make' anything, either. I think I'd be afraid to ask what it is by now! (My 'rural' vet charged around $75-100 for straightforward castrations, done here on the grass-but he has retired from practice, and the next best choice out here 'in the country' is MUCH costlier.)

I, too, can hardly believe how reasonable this cost is for some(and by the same token, how high it also sometimes is....Wow!)

My vet was a broke MT cowboy for much of his "early" life so he stays pretty reasonable. Plus he's a "big" horse vet and say, "well they aint' worth much so I guess I'll charge you ___". I just smile and nod.

It also helps that he is our cattle vet and we plunk down between $10,000-$13,000 a year for vaccine and services.

He gelded George for me. George had one testicale retained, not way up in the abdomen but wasn't that easy to get at either. My bill was $75 (give or take a dollar and some cents) and that was three years ago.

Holy Smokes -- I think I'm moving! Between the price of hay here in NY (Long Island -- $13-17 per bale) to gelding horses, I know I'm living in the wrong area!

Regular gelding costs $200+

to geld a crypt at LEAST $1,200

Thanks for all the replies. Wow! Gelding prices (and especially those with a retained testicle) can sure vary across the country!

I'll throw in my numbers too, Here in SE Pennsylvania: Regular gelding surgery is $200-250, includes the farm call, meds, etc.

I've called to get quotes on a monochrid for curiosity sake a few years ago, my regular horse vet won't do it, have to go to an equine hospital, one is haul in procedure, other hospital they stay few days to a week, and the cost is $1200-2,000! Ouch, is all I can say!

After seeing other prices, I think I should move, except I do love my vet!

The last time I had one done it was $400 plus and that was in 99'

It cost me $1800 to get Danny done, one retained behind the ring. I know I pay alot for my local vet hospital, but they are a regional referral center and are excellent. One thing I am grateful for is to have such a stellar facility within 15 minutes of my home, in case of a severe emergency.

Paid 149.00 yesterday to have a 10 month old done. normal ,not cryptorchid. took him in at 2 PM and picked him up at 4. WOW the diferences around the country.

$125 for regular gelding for me by my vet; around me you can find people who do them for less than half of that. But I love my vet and he gets my business.

I've never had to do a crypt so don't know the cost of that in our area.
