I know most of the eastern part of the country has been very warm this winter and we are no exception here.
After a good steady rain all morning which is not all that common here in Jan (snow would be the usual). The sun came out and it was 65 degrees this afternoon. Think typical high temp would be just below freezing. Did chores tonight with just polo shirt on and at 6 pm it was still over 60 degrees out side with a very strong wind that was quite warm. The ground is no longer frozen at all here. Usually this time of year frost will be at least 12" deep. Now we are back to mud every where. Flowers are sprouting in gardens here. Several golf courses are still open and a couple were quite busy today. The greens and fairways are still green!
The horses who are all set for 20 below zero nights are sweating!
The lack of any resemblence to winter here is beginning to have an effect on the economy. Nearly all of the seasonal winter workers are not working. Snowplow drivers, snowmobile shops, even heating oil companies hire lots of winter drivers but most are not delivering enough oil to use the extra drivers. Ski areas have made some snow but when people can golf in a tee shirt it is hard to get them to the ski slopes.
Just how warm is summer going to be?
