Well some of you may recall that I had a miniature schnauzer (Shotzie) that was struck by a car Dec. 10, 2003. In Feb of 2004 I bought another little schnauzer (Pepper) who was born Dec. 21, 2003. She was the runt of the litter but seemed healthy and all until we started having some visible issues last Fall. I rushed her to the veterinarian because of seizures she was having, loss of all coordination in her back legs, etc. One minute she was fine, then the seizure and 40 seconds later running around like nothing had happened. My veterinarian did some limited tests and she told me she suspected a liver shunt problem. We have been managing her food which causes the problem with dogs with liver shunts. All was fine until tonight. I did however notice last night she was acting somewhat not herself and lethargic.... tonight or should I see this morning it is BAD  . She will not settle down at all, she is drooling alot, she is walking into walls, seems very disoriented, stomach seems tender..... Heading to the vets shortly and I am afraid I will more than likely have to make a decision, the expensive surgery to do an exploratory to see exactly what kind of shunt she has and then the possible removal or clamping of it and hope and pray she makes it past the first week after surgery, apparently dogs with this condition don't always have a good outcome, or I will have to make the decision to help her cross the rainbow bridge  I am sitting here crying as I just wrote that. I keep saying why? why? It hurts so bad to love these animals, whether dogs, cats, horses, and have to lose them so early in their life. It's NOT FAIR!

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog(s). I know making that decision is hard but you'll know what's right if you listen to your heart. I've had to make that decision many times in the past; but I hate to see animals suffer and that usually makes the decision easier. I'm sorry you've had such a short time with your girl, but I'm sure she has added joy to your life and those are the feelings I like to hang on to. Good Luck with your girl. I hope and pray she recovers but if she doesn't I pray you help her across the rainbow bridge with the least amount of suffering. My heart goes out to you.

I am so very sorry Danielle....

I will be sending positive thoughts and prayers to you and little Pepper. Please keep us posted. And no, it is not fair to lose them so early, or at all, but I know I wouldn't miss the short time we are allowed to be with them, for any reason, it is so incredibly special, isn't it?

Its tragic to be faced with the loss of a pet. In so many cases it becomes a matter of dollars and cents. A few years ago we spent a small fortune on a dog trying to prolong a good quality of life for the animal. Even with all the money in the end we had an extra year with him but near the end the decision was made that no matter how much we spent it was not going to allow him to continue without pain and suffering. That was a hard pill to swallow and he was put to sleep.

OH Dani.....

I had a dog for years that had grand mull seizures.

It was a horrible thing and we did control it with medication. But there were constant adjustments in the meds and dosages all the time. I know what you are faced with and what you are going through.

Love......

I'm so sorry for what you are going through, I had a corgi develop seizures at 7. We did the meds too, but the time came for me to let him go....prayers for you and pepper. Kathy

Oh Danielle I am so sorry that your little one is going thru this. I can feel your heartache in your words and it just breaks my heart. No it is'nt fair is it.....we love these little creatures so much it hurts. I hope and pray that whatever your decision has to be thatyou will be at peace with it, and that your little one will no longer be in pain. God Bless.

Danielle, I'm so sorry for what you and Pepper are going through. I agree that it just doesn't seem fair that we have them for such a short time, even when they live a full life, and to lose them early is so painful. And having to make decisions like this are heart-rending.

My favorite vet has always stressed quality of life over quantity. You have already given Pepper a fantastic life and the best of care, and I know you'll make the best decision, either way. They say that human response is based on love or fear. If you make your decisions based on love, you can't go wrong.

Take care,

susanne

You're right.....it isn't fair!!!! But the love they give us keeps us finding those special friends.

Please read the red print at the bottom. I picked it because I had to let my best friend of 14 years go.

Prayers for you and Pepper. Its so hard to see them sick and we want to help them get better, but somethings they don't get better. Please keep us informed of Pepper's condition.
