Hi everyone, I am a new member and new mini horse owner. We have 3 regular horses and just adopted an elderly mini gelding named Marty from the MSPCA (if you live in MA you may have seen him on the news!).

He was pretty neglected when he came into rescue, very underweight with terrible teeth and undiagnosed/untreated cushing's, but is about 90% of the way back to health I think. His skin is still in rough shape and you can tell he has not had much handling recently. I'm hoping to learn as much as I can about caring for our new tiny horse friend so he lives as long as possible... we think he is about 30 now!

Thanks!

Welcome from NW Connecticut. Marty is lucky that he has found a home with you. I have found that the folks on this site are extremely knowledgeable about these little mini creatures and are more than willing to give good sound advice/suggestions from their experiences. Good luck with Marty.

Thank you! We have lots of experience with old horses, just slightly bigger ones, so hope we can do right by the little fella. He is such a funny little creature.

How wonderful that his has a home with you. The pictures show how special he is and I think he knows it. 🥰
Glad you are on this forum. Looking forward to hear about Marty's progress.

Haha he definitely is full of himself and has strong opinions. We're looking forward to seeing how his personality develops as he settles.

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone. We are so obsessed with little Marty. He has the strongest opinions of any horse I have ever met. At the moment we don't have a shelter in the area where he is turned out, so this weekend when it was rainy we left him in until the rain passed. He was kicking his food over and not eating, my husband called me thinking he was sick and when I took him out to hand walk him he dragged me to the turnout 😂

Our big horse very much wants to be his friend but - maybe owing to his size and the fact that he had testicles until last month - Marty has a lot of attitude when Oz approaches their shared fenceline. The squeals are getting less though so I have hope they can be turned out together eventually!

Welcome @MartysMom ! How wonderful you've opened your home to a little dude. Oh he looks like stink on hooves, and adorable as they come! I'm sure he'll bring years of amusement and education to your family. Yes, they have so much personality and opinion wrapped up in those tiny bodies. Welcome from the great white (currently green) north of Alberta, Canada!
