I just can not begin to tell you how scared to death I am of flying. I mean, shaking, sick at my stomach fear. I have flown before, none were good. 3 times I think. One time the plane lost an engine, or was malfunctioning,,,,,,,so the pilot comes on, tells us and says we will be fine, may just be a little shakey. Maybe he is fine, maybe the plane is fine, but I was NOT fine,,,,,,,I did not need to know. I guess all planes can still fly minus an engine, unless they just got one.

My daughter lives in NY, was home over Christmas and we ordered her wedding dress, wanted to do that one together. She is getting married in Sept. The dress is in!!! I decided I wanted to deliver it myself and with this weekend being Mothers Day, would be a great weekend. She has no idea. Do not have all worked out just yet. But I think I'm making excuses. It would be a 12-13 hour drive, I only have 5 days to do it all in. I found a plane ticket for $188,,,,,I figured it out, I would spend more in gas than that.

And now I sit, looking at the site to order the ticket,,,,,,,,and I can't hit the submit button.   I do not have a motion sickness problem, I do fine with that part, it is the fear that gets deep in my gut.

This is special, I need/want to do this. Why can't I just hit submit??

: It's safer in the sky,,,way, way less time,,,,,,,,,I have all the positives, but it's just not working.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Hi..I have the same fear...have only flew a few times...can I say XANAX???? :aktion033:

Good luck! You CAN do it!!!

Just think of the look in your daughters eyes when you arrive, after doing something that scares you so much, just to bring her dress to her. That you would push your fears aside to be with her on a very special weekend and how happy she will be that you are there. And yes flying is safer then driving, and its a short trip in the plance versus a long tiring trip in a car. Hit that button and go see your daughters smiling face.

I was just going to say the same as Pam -- get some xanax!!! (and maybe a rum and coke!)

I also have this fear. What I do, is I close my eyes and imagine that all the bumps are actually from the road we are in driving in an old beat up pick up truck through the country. I picture the beautiful scenery and everything but, the difference between being on an airplane feeling bumps and being in an old truck feeling bumps makes it much better for me.

As an Air Traffic Controller...I can tell you that flying is absolutely the safest way to travel (but that's not probably going to help you any)....a low dose pill like the others suggested will help ease your anxiety.

And yes, depending on the size of the plane and altitude, a plane can go for miles without an engine. Large, heavy planes don't have the ability like smaller planes...turbo props, etc...

:new_shocked: I do not fly...I cannot fly..nope nope not me! BUT you should get some XANAX and take 2!

I've got nearly 40 hours of flying time in, I was on my way to getting a private pilots lisc. I Looooove flying, and the views can be so breathtaking! (finances has put that desire on the back burner for now). Planes are very safe, in fact, a 14 yr. old can receive a private lisc. verses 16 for a car, if that is a helpful thought for you.

I do hope that you purchased a ticket and that you do surprise your daughter. It would be the best mother's day ever for you if you went, and would mean so much to her.

I agree about taking something to calm yourself, that would help.

one word... DRUGS!!!

I am horribly afraid of flying I mean bad I am afraid of heights, I am claustrophobic and afraid of water.. (thank goodness have not flown over a ocean) I only fly once a year and that is to Nationals.. funny .. wont do it for anything else but a horse show and then I can force myself.

Each year i can take a little less drugs the first year OMG i was out of it.. Raven had to look for the gate number hold the tickets it was bad,... Thankfully I always need less drugs on the way home the 10 days of 1=2 hour sleep a night takes its toll and helps to make a much smaller dose work.

of course we have to fly on this dinky little plane that you have to be a size 3 to be ablet o walk thru the aisle without twisting

Make sure the window is closed whatever you do dont look out headphones help even though you can barely hear anything even at the loudest volume

It does get easier for me each time you can do it!

When I was younger I flew a lot on milatary flights, but NOT anymore.

I wish I wasn't afraid now because I have been offered free tickets to Switzerland more than once by my aunt that gets them for flying so much or something. I even have family to stay with for free over there.

Up in the alps even with goats and cows all around.

I was there when I was 7 years old and I still remember how pretty it all was.

ummm maybe I need some of whatever drug you guys were talking about

I had flown 13 times and had 9 emergencies! Brake failures, electrical fires, engine failure,etc...

All I had to do was think of flying and i was shaking, sick to my stomach, throwing up etc.

I am a hypnotist so I went and got one of my friends in the business to hypnotize me.

I now fly at the drop of a hat. Looking out windows and really enjoy it. Go and get it done it will be the best money you ever spend!

check out your area and find one and give yourself a gift! In less than an hour you can turn things around.

Don't let Bonnie scare you, yes there are emergencies...99.9% of the time they are no different then your car's engine light coming on...it is very normal and to be expected. If the slightest tiniest minute thing does happen, it's made to be an "emergency" simply because of the magnitude of people involved. I've been a controller for 9 yrs and have seen 100's of "emergencies" (we are talking millions of airplanes)...only 1 crash...a helicopter that was doing touch - n- go's in the pattern (touch and go's are taking off and flying in a square and returning to the airport, but just touching down on the runway and taking off again, not landing, repeatedly) .

I am also a private pilot and flying is very safe. Being hypnotized doesn't sound like a bad idea though, better than being drugged up , I should do that to quit smoking.

Okay... No offense Bonnie, but I think if I found out you were on my plane w/ this track record, I'd be fighting Carolyn for some xanax :bgrin :bgrin :bgrin

I have 5 commercial pilots in my neighborhood. When i told them of my experiences, they would start to tell me how safe it is etc. when I got done they all said the same thing!!!!!! Bonnie don't ever step foot on my plane!!!!!

Seriously tho i have flown many times since and NOTHING has gone wrong!

But the controller is right, this has happened to me over the space of 25-28 years. We have all had many more oops in our cars but we just drive on and don't think about it, but because its an airplane its a really big deal to us.

I would rather see someone go and get hypnotized and get it taken care of, then use drugs and still have the problem.
