Someone is coming around when I am gone. You don't mess with the babies!

Monday I came home from work, horses were aggitated, but didn't see anything wrong. Let them into the pasture and they calmed down. Went to water and there was a film on top of the water, both tanks in the girls side, and one of the boys side. I smelled it but could never figure out for sure what it was. Lucky the horses must of known as they hadn't drank half as normal.

Tuesday I came home, and there was a bunch of different trash every where in the dry lot.

Yesterday I didn't work but left for 3 hours last night. Heard a lot of banging in the barn when I came home. Went in and there were 2 horses in the stall that is left cleaned and closed, for emergencies. An older mare and a baby, not her baby. That stall door is closed with 2 chains. There is no way they opened it, then closed it back putting one chain on it to close it. The mare maybe could have gotten over the wall, it is 5 foot, but no way the baby could have. I haven't found the 2nd chain. What is significant about these 2 horses is, if someone was in there, they are the 2 most likely to run away.

Does anyone have their foaling camera where it could be seen by someone? Where do you position it? Do you think it would just be stolen?

I know they can and will do things we think they can't, but I just don't think that is the case.

Any ideas to help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

pad lock every gate , post signs tresspassers will be prossicuted.... Keep out , attack dogs etc... if there is still someone comming around I would get a restraining order on "sweet " ex-hubby.

yep... you dont mess with the horse kids. I would have had that water sampled, lock you hay up , and grain where someone can not tamper with it.Put a chain across your driveway, even rake the driveway if its dirt so you know when someone has entered your property. If you like your neighbors ask them to keep a watchful eye. and go to the police.

good luck

I would put a camera up and record. I know mine records and we can move it outside etc

If I were that sure that someone was coming onto my property & messing with my horses I would call the police & tell them about it--ask them if they can make a few patrols past my place and through the neighborhood during the day. Ask a neighbor to keep an eye out. Post signs saying video surveillance cameras in use and trespassers will be violated. Get a camera of some sort, there are those motion activated nanny cameras available--once you've got the person on tape then the police have something to act on. Take the day off work but make it look like you're away from home just like usual, then pick a good vantage spot & watch.

That's just CREEPY, and not safe for your horses if someone is putting them in a stall together or adding something to their water.

You have to call the police and let them know!! Get a outdoor dog. Please be careful!! Ask your son if anyone is mad at him also or if he is having any trouble at school, don't rule out your ex!!

Be Careful!!!

Carolyn, I told you about my problems...and the Sheriff told me to be sure to POST NO Trespassing which I did immediately..and the video camera is a big plus. I have more than one and 2 are obvious as they are in the foaling stalls..the other one is in a different location and I DO watch them. I also put a 'night light' in the barn and its up high in the rafters where no one can easily get to it. (In reality its a string of white 'christmas' lights, that gives a soft glow)

I also have a dog, but he is getting older now and is not really as aggressive as he once was with strangers..however, he can and DOES bark.

I just hope you find out who is messing around before something BAD happens..and another thing, if your horses are locked into stalls, they cannot escape. I let mine outside as much as I could. That way they DO have a chance to run when someone is trying to catch them.

This brings back some BAD memories...

Posting signs is a given. If they know there are signs and that you've noticed a problem it may stop.

Ask neighbors to keep an eye out for trouble while you're away. This will accomplish two things: 1)make all of the neighbors aware there is a problem and keep an eye on their kids; 2)let the mknow that if anything is going on while you're gone -it probably not ok and to take notice or call you.

I would also put up a camera wher they can't see it and connect it to a website like MareStare so you and others can figure out who is coming over.

Oh man that is scary. I like what has been posted so far. I hope all of this is taken care of quickly. Its no fun to have to worry about that kind of thing.

Put up cams and let others help you watch or record - or both. It's really pretty easy to do and you will get alot of piece of mind being able to check in from anywhere at any time of the day. Plus once they know the cams are up...people are much less likely to misbehave.

Let me know if you need some help!

I agree, it is very unsettling to know someone is out there unsupervised messing around with your babies. We had someone once go in one of our pens and let a gelding in with the mares---not a big deal but it was just the thought someone was there and what they could have done that was upsetting. It has not happened again but I would not hesitate to put a camera up.

Thank you all so much.

We had a break in, theft on Memorial Day, then in June the barn, shed and front porch all trashed.

Sheriff notified each time, they do nothing. Trying to decide if it is all related, just not sure.

I think I need a smaller friend to have with me.

I would get a VERY large and protective donkey - he/she will let you know if someone/thing is coming around while you are home.

Persoanlly, I would raise h*ll at my local police department and deeply express my concern. Them not doing anything does not fly with me when it comes to MY property and MY living animals and MY well being!

Well that might work for some, we have a donkey (not large), but she is the first one in the barn when it rains and will leave you in a big donkey hurry if something funny or strange comes around. Not all donkeys are protective.

We had someone coming up on our porch and taking things.I put up motion lights. It has stopped the junk in the front. I had a horse out one night but there are 2 sets of gates they have to go through to actually get off property. I am also putting motion lights in the back. If the horses set them off oh well. I also bought a GP/Bernees MT Dog but she is only almost 5 months old and still very much a puppy. A very big puppy. But a puppy. I am installing a door for her because she does spend time inside too. Since she has gotten old enough to give some protective barks I no longer worry about the horses. Just because of her size people are less likely to intrude at night.

why not try the mare stare service? I am sure people will be willing to tune in a few times a day to check and see if they can find anyone disturbing your horses

DOCUMENT everything! (File a complaint with the police, even though they've been useless before. That way, you can say they were notified.)

It almost seems that these idiots know your schedule, so either they know you or are watching.

Have they taken anything or have they just "caused trouble".....? This may indicate whether they know you or not.

Motion sensitive lights would be helpful.....will at least startle the person and make them back off initially.

Locks are good.

Raking your driveway is a cool idea too! In case the idiot pulls in to cause trouble.

Motion sensitive Cameras with a recording device would be awesome, but probably expensive.

Neighbors watching is a good idea.

I also like what was recommended earlier........Leave like you usually do, but take time off from work and quietly watch your house! (Have a camera!)

Yeah.... It's called a weapon. It sounds like you have an intruder and who knows what else they may be doing. Especially, since your having different incidents transpire all within a 3-day period. It sounds like they are watching your every move. Don't play with that.... it's time to get some camera's set up and start watching whats going on in your surroundings immediatly. Individuals (women) are assulted and worse everyday.

I'm not one who believes that you need to go looking for trouble but you certainly need to watch out for it.....

I almost posted a new thread when I saw this. Actually a few days ago I wrote a Warning in the CMHR Newletter:

WARNING:

October is a month to use extreme caution and know the exact whereabouts of your children, pets and animals at all times. More kidnappings happen and animals disappear and are maimed, during this month more than any other month of the year. Call it cults or rituals, whatever you want, or just down right dirty tricks, but certain people will do horrific things to others at this very time. Check your security often, leave nothing to the imagination, and be very careful and hope all will provide Treats, NOT Tricks this Halloween Season.

Carolyn, this is a serious situation and should not be taken lightly. I think Marty is correct in saying that October is not a good month for pets and people. I would document everything and report everything...even if the cops are doing nothing to help physically at least they will have records. I dont want to go into details as they are very gorry but in Miami Fl. there have been 17 cases of horrific acts that have been done to horses in the last yr. ( these horses are in peoples back yards AND in big fancy barns ) They believe it has something to do w/black market and selling of horse meat. I dont think this is whats going on w/you but its still something to think about. I would also take the time to sit and watch undercover for a few days and would also have motion detector lights installed. Even if its kids just out for a little fun and not intentionally out to harm your horses...things can turn real bad real fast. I dont have to tell you.... just leaving the feed room door open ...... " here little horses, have a bunch of Halloween candy "......" oh, I wonder if they could have a beer...I'll just pour some in their water " Not to mention them entering your house again its all too scarey. I sure hope its not your ex !!

I hope I will never have the need to install cameras but I think in your case you should....are there companies out there that perhaps will rent them to you? Just a thought.

I hope you get to the bottom of this and stay safe
