Our oven quit -- just in time for the holidays! The top of the electric stove still works, but how, oh how, do I make a Christmas ham?????????
sad.gif

I have one of those big black roasters. Does anyone know if I can make a ham on top of the stove in it? Has anyone here done this? I can find recipes for ham & this or ham & that on top of the stove, but not a BIG ham like you'd make for Christmas.

Anyone know?? Eventually, we'll get a new stove or get this oven fixed, but with all the bills that come or are created in December, we'll probably have to wait. And I rarely cook anyway, so it's no big loss on a day-to-day basis. But, for the holiday??

Anyone have an answer? Thanks for your thots............

Do you have a crock pot??? you could cook/bake a ham in that. it would just take longer but then again it would be that much more tender and juicier... and you wouldnt be tying up the stove top for your other dishes. I would just put it in the crock pot the day before you want to eat it and cook it on slow all day and night and until the time it is to eat. just a thought..(i too had a stove that went out on me and i had to learn how to cook everything in either a crock pot or on the stove top until we could to buy a new oven/stove)

I'm sorry this has to come at this time of year!

I've used a crockpot too and works great or an electric plug in roast (if you don't have one maybe you can borrow one?--too bad we weren't closer) I've never tried on the stovetop, except to fry ham for breakfast.

Our stove went out last year too. We replaced the heating element. I would love a new stove but we just don't have the money. We bought the element at our local electric company, I think it was $60. Much cheaper than buying a whole new stove.

Get a precooked ham that would be fine served cold. I think the Honeybaked Spiral sliced hams are that way, then you don't have to cook it. Is the broiler out as well? If not you can always get one of the spiral sliced hams from the grocery store, they are precooked too but you have to brown the topping on it. Just watch it so it doesn't burn.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays

Could you buy a precooked ham & heat it slowly in the microwave? If not your roaster might work especially if you have a rack to put underneath the ham to keep it from sticking to the bottom.

I did a search on allrecipes.com & did not find one for stove top cooking. Did find this crock pot recipe........................... This is a great site to find all kinds of recipes. Each recipe has a review section where you can read what other cooks thought about the recipe after trying it. The reviews are what helps me decide whether I want to try the recipe or not........................... Go to www.allrecipes.com & type in crock pot ham & you can read the reviews on this one.

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups packed brown sugar

1 (8 pound) cured, bone-in picnic ham

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:

Spread about 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar on the bottom of the slow cooker crock. Place the ham flat side down into the slow cooker - you might have to trim it a little to make it fit. Use your hands to rub the remaining brown sugar onto the ham. Cover, and cook on Low for 8 hours.

I often do ham on top of the stove. Do you have a canner or pot big enough to accomodate the ham that you have in mind? If you do fill the pot with water and put your ham in it. Bring it to a boil then just let it cook. When it is done take it out of the pot sprinkle with brown sugar and add your pinapple slices around the plate it doesnt taste quite like baked ham but it is still good and would solve your dilema.

I was asking at work, a co-worker just mentioned the canner too. She says she makes a roast in a small 6-quart pressure cooker on her stovetop-makes a roast and potatoes in about 1/2 hour.

Another idea might be to go rent an oven for a week. You can go to Rent-a-center, or RTO or a place like that and rent one very cheap for a week.

Precooked ham, can of pineapples, brown sugar.

Cut the ham into slices. Take a pot and line it with long layers of aluminum foil enough to fold over and cover...spray non-stick cooking spray (preferably butter flavored) onto the foil. Lay the slices of ham inside it. Pour the pineapples with the juice into the pot and sprinkle with brown suger.

Make sure your aluminum foil is long enough to cover the ham It acts like a dutch oven of sorts. Cook on slow so it does'nt burn, the ham will get the flavor of the pineapple and browns sugar and since it's precooked you don't have to worry about that part of it.

Also check regularly and add a little bit of water to it to keep the liquid going if it starts to dry.

Hmmmmmmmmm....I wonder if the "big black roaster" is the same thing as a Dutch oven? Couldn't think of what it's called. It's big enuff to bake a turkey in, or a big ham.

I like the ideas, but I think I'd have to get a much bigger crock pot -- just got a little one, but hey, it's cheaper than buying a new stove! Also, tempted by the rack in the roaster idea. If anyone has any more thots on this, I'd like to see 'em!! Thanks. - k

My aunt used to just do a boiled ham in a big soup pan and it was great.

My mom has cooked a pre cooked ham in her Rival Slow Cooker (A.K.A. Crock Pot) think she got it last year at Wal-Mart. It's bigger, kinda oval shaped....I know it was 30.00 bucks or less.Model 6451 if that helps, it has the stoneware inside, stainless steel outside and a glass lid. Works great for slow cooking a ham.....or big enough to fit a large roasting chicken too. Although the ham was a precooked ham not the old fashioned bone in ham type.

The black enamel pan you described is also called a dutch oven. The only thing I'd worry about cooking on a stove top with pork......use a meat thermoeter to insure it heats up enough to cook pork through all the way. You know all tricinoisis stuff

with raw pork.....I'm talking the non pre cooked stuff like old fashioned in bone hams. Also the bone in hams on a cook stove top.... not sure if you won't get the carmelized type top or browning?

edited to add: the precooked hams in a crock pot(I like Hormel Cure 81 as they are lean and seem like a good cut of meat) are good if you slow cook in pineapple juice with pineapple rings on top and a touch of brown sugar across the top and allowed to slowly cook in.

We've cooked our hams on top of the stove for years. BIG pot, add ham, add water several inches deep, add lid and turn it on. Get water almost boiling, then turn down to a lower setting and cook several hours. It is done when the water has a clear look (of course it will have a brownish color) and not a cloudy look. Hey, the broth is great for cooking greens, cabbage, beans, etc.

Depending on the age of your stove, it could be as simple as an oven element gone out (does one get hot, the other not?), the switch OR....some actually have a fuse that can go out and makes the oven totally and suddenly "off"

So, if it went out in the WHAM fashion, it is most likely in the wiring (fuse/switch, etc.)

Cook that ham on the top in a big pot.
