I completely beleive in Horse Whispering personally. I just think there is so many myth's the go with it and when the movie (good movie!) was made on it ..i think people didnt take it serious really.

Do you beleive Horse Whispers are real.

Like it said in the movie ...some people understand horses like none other, or do you just beleive that they are just people that are really good with horseman?

Yes. I know two personally.

I don't believe in horse whisperers but rather think they are horse listeners. Horses talk to us all the time but we are too busy talking and trying to bend them to our will that we don't hear what they are telling us. Horses are masters of body language and true horse people have figured out what they are telling us and can answer in kind.

Yup, seen it a couple of times with different folks.

Anyone can learn to read a horse. Some people are just better at it than others. Call it whispering if you want, it's a great skill regardless!

"Horse Whispering" is a pretty phrase.

I see it in quite a few people right here on the forum every day. It is every bit of good horsemanship. It is also known as good old common horse sense. Some people can communicate with their horses/animals and have a better connection with them than others. There are also some horses out there that have a personality conflict with their owners and no amount of communication will help. I think it does have much to do with true love and your animal and nothing more. I know that I can look into Sonny's eyes, and Tracey's eyes and know what they are telling me. Doesn't mean I have any special talent. We just know eachother so very well and it runs deep from the heart.

I wish I could tell you that I am one....but I am not . I just love them. I do know two real ones tho. One is here in VA my daughters trainer who owns arabians, I have had him work a problem mini I had years ago. Buddy Cable can get a horse to do anything. The other one I believe is Bruce. He has managed some of the toughest minis and ponies I have seen.

Like one of the forum members said, they're horse LISTENERS. I've seen one woman, very humble, who has a special gift with "interesting" horses. Bonnie Fogg is an excellent horse listener and communicator who has helped me understand a couple horses.

Marty makes an excellent point about "knowing" your horses and their little nuances of communication with us. It's kind of like knowing our children so well that you can take one look at them and can guess what's up with them....good day or bad day.

Problem with people and their horses, like myself, is that we're so busy doing "chores" that we don't take the time to clear our minds and listen to your horse....either through visual ques they send or a sense that gets you right in the heart.

Since having my head injury, instinct has been heightened to compensate. Wouldn't change a thing....the world is much simpler and happier as a result.

Depends who is doing it. Monty Roberts is a bunch of smoke and mirrors, don't believe a thing that man says. I've seen his video and it's odd that the horse comes in already sweaty ... also, for his live shows, he pre-selects the horses, so he is reasonably confident he'll be able to do something with the horse in 30 minutes. If the horses are truly problematic, there's no way you're going to fix that in 30 minutes. He's wise enough to know his own limitations. I hope people are wise enough to know he's a good showman, but not much of a horseman.

I've found the people who are most impressed with the idea of "horse whispering" are those most lacking in horse sense. Anybody can learn to ready body language - regardless of whether it's horse or human - but most people don't care enough to educate themselves.

Look to the old masters - Ray Hunt, Bill & Tom Dorrance - if you REALLY want to learn about horses. More recently, Buck Branaman has been doing good things. But avoid the guys who rode in on the wave of "horse whispering" - they're probably just looking to make money.

I believe there are people who are gifted in Horse Whispering.

You bet I do!

) I have Monty Roberts book and there is alot of good info IF you already have some horse knowledge and IF you do not take it at face value........

Horse whisperer's merely have alot of good common horse sense and the ability to read an animal's body language......yes I believe there are people who do this....I also feel there are people who just are naturally more in tune with animals in general........I also think there are frauds riding on the coatstrings of others and there are people who have found a way to get rich off of their abilities

Yes, I have to defend Monty too- he does know his own limits, of course he does- he is an OLD man now, no way is he going to tackle;e the real problems face on, why should he?? I saw him work the Queens horses when he was over here- now, whatever you think of our Monarchy, please let me tell you, our Monarch, herself is both a Lady and a Horsewoman, of around Monty's age. If she had considered it bullsh*t she'd have told him so!!! She gave him a few difficult racehorses to work on, instead, so she is still open to new ideas!! AND he sorted one of her colts in three hours, turned it from potential expensive dog meat (it would not go into the starting gate and was on it's last warning from the Jockey club) to a racehorse. That is a result as far as I ma concerned. Having said all that, I can get results, and I have NEVER achieved "join up" to this day!!

I know someone who uses the Parelli method- or so she says. Her horses are head cases!! To use something you have first to understand it and second to have goals.

I don't believe in "whispering" but I do believe in understanding the nature of the beast. I believe anything you do must be the horse's idea (or get the horse to believe it's their idea) if you want a willing partner. I like Monty Roberts and I think he has a good message. But like others have said, you can't take it at face value but use it as a reference.

Someone once said, "There are no problem horses, only problem owners (or trainers!)".

i believe there are people that are truly gifted with animals. horses, dogs cats etc. i never fall for quick fixes because they always turn out to be temporary band aids. Ever since i was a kid i have had a way with kids and animals
smile.gif
Even as a teen i could babysit kids that no one else could. i believe its due to un ending patientce. I was talking to fran about "problem horses" and more likely then not its because someone wont take the time to work out the horses problems. Everyone wants a quick fix. I take a little bit from everyone i meet and every book i read and rely alot on instinct and common sense

Kay- you hit it on the head there....COMMON SENSE!!! Marty Roberts has always said that what he does is nothing new, that he did not invent it, that all he is doing is showing how to do it and writing it down. I think all the "hype" around the Monty Roberts thing has come from other people, not form him. I can get any horse to load, I have never found a horse I cannot teach, in all my life. This is my thing. I weigh less than 100pounds soaking wet and stand a good deal less than five foot on tiptoe. I can load anything. BUT.... loading a horse, even my way, does NOT teach it to load- that takes longer. Undoing all the bad work others have done can take up to a year. I can ride anything (or could). Just go out into the field and get on it. Done time and time again. Is that horse saddle trained??? Well, you fill it in!! I can put a horse to a cart in half an hour, drive it in an hour- is it cart trained??? Yes, you are getting the picture now. Some people can do this, all it takes is a bit of empathy and a lot of COMMON SENSE!!! As has been said, this does not fix the problem.

Same with dogs- I can get a pretty good obedience round out of any dog (EXCEPT my own
smile.gif
) in five minutes. Teaching them to do it consistently takes five weeks, minimum.

I used to be able to say I could catch any horse, by the way.

Then I met our youngsters lead rein pony.

I tried for four hours.

Gave up, got her.

She toddled up to it, slung a rope round it's neck and went back to the TV.

Sometimes you have to just give in gracefully

I believe that our daughter is... She is 6 years old, and weighs 40 lbs.. (very petite)... I just want to share a funny story with you all... One day, a neighbor had his nine cows get away from him, and were running loose in the neighborhood... One brama bull was jumping in the neighbors koi pond, another one was knocking down one of those plastic expensive fences... there were adults all over the place... all freaking out... no clue of what to do. Six were bulls.. had the equipment and all. I put our horses in the back, and tried to use alphafa to herd some of them into the front yard to get them off the road.. (that has really fast traffic)... I did not get anywhere with them.

Enter our six year old, (who was five at the time), and she gets in the Brama's face... and says, "I'm the boss, and you're gonna do what I tell you, and get in that pen!" Just like the pied piper, off she goes with all nine of them slowly working their way into our front yard area. Later I was freaking out.. going.. I can't believe I let our little tiny daughter "run with the bulls"!

I should of known... I had her on Horsezilla lead lining her when she was only four, and they decided to jump a fence, when I slacked off on the lead line... not a problem. She is sooooo confident around animals.. and they do listen to her.

Another time, goats were loose in our area, and on SR 40.. (if you're in Ocala.. you know how dangerous that road is). When no one else was able to get the goats.... we told her to call them. She did, and caught a baby goat. I think because she's soooo tiny, she doesn't intimidate them, and they listen to her. After we got the tiny goat the others just followed. It was touching.

Yep.... I believe she just has a talent. She's in Kindergarten now... and as much as she knows her horses, her alphabet is a struggle for her right now... but I believe she will someday be an asset to any vet school she ends up going to. I have no clue how she could not someday be a vet.

God Bless,

Lynn W

I do not necessarily believe in "Horse Whispering". I believe it is a method of training and reading a horse instead of "breaking them down" which is often the method and slowly is going away (not fast enough).

I had the pleasure of meeting Monty Roberts and watching him work a horse (it was a mustang) at a horse expo this past spring. Sure it was not a horse with absolutely no manners, this horse did have some basic training, leading and such. But I personally talked to the owner of the horse over a few beers and this horse had never had a saddle on it's back or a bit in its mouth, nor had it ever been worked by Monty before or ever have this type of training. It took about an hour and the horse was being ridden AND the horse did not seem traumatized by the event. So yes, I do believe this type of training works and that some people are better at it than others.
