I took Hunter my emensely pregnant dachshund and they did an ultrasound to make sure that the puppies were not in distress. Her temp has been down for two days, I expected her to labor friday.... still nothing. All is well but her vaginal vault is very relaxed and there is no reflex there, could be that she just isnt ready or could be primary uterine inertia. We are going to give her 24 hours and see what gives. Fortunately I have the best vet in the world who, even tho she is closed on weekends gave me her cell phone and home phone in case I need her. we will decide tomorrow if we section her or wait one more day . Either way by monday we will have puppies. I learned from the repro specialist that saw her today that with progesterone testing when breeding they can pinpoint expected delivery to within a 12-24 hour period so they know exactly when to intervene. I also learned that puppies are not created at different times. The 63 days is from ovulation not breeding that puppies are born so wether you breed every day for a week, every other day for a week, none of the puppies are developementally behind when labor starts. All the eggs will fertilize at the same time. and puppy developement begins when ovulation occurs. I always thought that tiny puppies came from the last breeding and bigger ones from the first. In reality runts are developed when their placenta implants over a scar from a previous placenta breakaway. FASCINATING! You are never too old to learn or too experienced!

Dr Escobar is the repro specialist for Central VA and Dr Susan Ware, is the best vet ever! She is also the best new puppy owner I have ever had. She lovers her pie girland keeps me posted with pics and reports not to mention she now has her office on my street!

Will keep you all posted.

Hi Lyn

Hoping that all is going well with your doxy and that she has given birth to several happy, healthy puppies! I have got to admit that having puppies is very stressful on me -- I just reallly cave in when I know that one of my girls is in pain, and you just can't take that away from them -- and it goes on & on & on ! ! ! ! My Havanese, Daisy, was in pre-labor most of yesterday and finally went into labor around 3 - first pup about 4 - and then the other 6 roughly 30-45 minutes apart - 7 puppies in all. One of them is teenie - maybe 2 oz and he really had me worried when he didn't seem to be able to regulate his temp --however, we seem to have crossed that hurdle and now are busy making sure that he get latched on good and tight on a regular basis since he is about 1/2 the size of his other litter mates and they can push him out of the way pretty easily -- this next week is going to be exhausting, but hopefully all of the little ones will do well.

Keep us posted on your girl - got my fingers crossed that all is well +++++

WE did a c section this morning. 2 boys 5 girls, 4 of them pintos.(piebalds). Brought them home , tried to let one nurse, turned my back and hunter had killed him! So, her milk isnt in, Im feeding 6 muzzleing her to let them suckle any way and praying that her mothering instinct kicks in. Her daughter had a section last year and loved her babies instantly. This is hunters 3rd litter, she is 5. The uterine walll was just so stretched that she never went into labor but the ultrasound today showed the puppies in distress. They are large, between 5 and 6 oz. Hunters belly was draging the ground. Dr Escobar was fabulous and let me help, the uterine wall was so thin that we could see the puppies clearly thru it. He did save her uterus tho. I was surprized.

Will post a pic of the litter later. Please pray that she gets her act together.

They are taking the bottle well but I really want to get them on mom for colostrum. I muzzle her and lay them with her, holding her so they can nuzzle and hope fully nurse.

Lyn

Wow Lynn - I'll bet she was dragging the ground - that is a lot of puppies for a doxy! I really feel for you with having to play mom - thankfully I haven't had to do that yet - just have to babysit so that my little guys & gals all get a good long suckle at the breakfast bar pretty regularly.

Keep us posted -- I hope Hunter makes a full recovery, but boy would I ever be nervous about breeding her again. This is Daisy's last litter, I will have her spayed this spring and hope that it allows her to live a long, long life.

Congratulations Lyn, just a suggestion, put cheese whiz or peanut butter on one of the puppies or put something Hunter loves to lick, try it first on your finger than transfer to the puppies just above the puppies tail for now?

Hope this helps

Stacy, this is her last litter.. He didnt spay her because I do show her. She has had two litters before one of 3 and 1 of 4. We skipped two heats with her and then did this breeding. we never expected so many puppies! She has never acted like this with babies but I understand that she doesnt kow she had these...... She was asleep and she never went into labor. We found the puppies stressed on ultrasound and one in the canal but no contractions. She has no idea these are hers! She only knows her tummy is sore and this thing was making it more sore. We are muzzleing her every feeding for now. I am bottle feeding in between.

Lyn

Thanks Reble for the cheese suggestion.

Considering breeding my gal for another litter, she had 5 the first time (year ago in August), just afraid she'll have a BIG litter the next time

Congrats!!! They are cute. I hope Hunter comes around. Dixie has decided she is mama to our new kitten and the kitten thinks she is her mama. Olivia follows her around the whole house and tries to play and suck off her. Dixie cleans her and snuggles with her. I'll have to get a pic, it's soo cute.

Sorry have been too busy feeding babies to post an update. After Hunter killed her first puppy monday, I have been muzzleing her to let the babies nurse. She has hardly any milk. last night I took the muzzle off to let her lick babies. She now knows that they are hers but she still doesnt have enough milk to feed them so, I let them suck all day but, I also feed them several times. Two more died yesterday . We are down to 4 but these are holding their own. ! is a red piebald male who looks at first glance to be the pic based on rib length and keel. Head and upper arm lengths.... second pic so far is the black and tan female. then the red female and last the red pie girl. All are nice, there are champion grandparents top and bottom, a pointed mom. Good litter. Im just really pooped! 55 year old women have no business having babies!! lol

Anyway we are plugging along. I am greatful that she is mothering them. She is still on Metoclopromide for milk let down till tomorrow. Saw a couple of drops today. Babies lost weight last night when I left them with her so I started feeding again this am.

Lyn

Oh, how sad Lyn - I hope that Hunter's milk comes in very soon and that her maternal instincts kick in bigtime - it is so tiring keeping watch over all these little babies. I am sending you good vibes ------

She is washing and warming babies, they are nursing off her some but I am still suplimenting. IF they can get any colostrum I dont mind feeding them , they eat pretty quickly. Here are a couple cozy pics. Hunter and her brood no muzzle anymore and beginning to realize that she is a mom.

The puppies dont mind lunch with Nanny.

this is the red pie girl. She is the littlest. They all way about 5.5 oz today.

Lyn

Ahhhaaa, way cute - and it looks like Hunter's milk has come in - what a relief. My biggest puppies are only 5.5 oz - the little one is just over 3 oz now, but he is holding his own and is a fiesty little dickens --

Congrats on the pups Lyn. I'm sorry you're having difficulties (isn't dog breeding FUN

). I hate when a pup(s) die and/or aren't thriving. I know how tiring and stressful it can be. If I was close by, I'd be helping you out for sure. Hope you have some support

They are doing well, Milk is still scarce and I am feeding every 3 hours. Thank God she is willing to mother them. Im getting in the routine now. 3 hour naps are wonderful!

That's so wierd. By that pic, it looks like she's engorged with milk.

She has a real flabby belly. She was really stretched by those babies. I can barely express any when I get them on.
