The two quarter horses we rescued a few weeks ago are settling in. The black mare is doing well. The poor little paint weanling isn't in as good of shape. We had the vet out to geld him and check on some other problems yesterday. The poor guy had a swelling on his lower jaw that had always been there, but really got big the night before. She stuck it to see if it was an abscess or hematoma and got about 20 cc of pus out! It was terrible. She lanced it open a bit to help with drainage. Who knows what he got into, or how long it was in there. Then, the poor guy had wolf teeth coming in so she took those out too. While doing the gelding part we discovered he has lice/mites in his groin area and a little umbilical hernia. The poor little guy! Here we are, trying to get him used to people, and now we have to treat him for all these things. I am afraid he is going to learn to hate us! We are going to have to check the mare over pretty carefully too, as she probably has the lice problem too.
Then, on Friday, we ended up with a beautiful registered quarter horse that has a re-occurring limp in one of her front feet. So far diagnosis is a mystery. The folks can't use her anymore so we took her. She is a real sweetheart. We just have to get this foot thing figured out.
On Sunday, we ended up with a 5 year old red and white pinto pony! This one is a long story. She is kind of a little pistol, and was too much for the family that had her, but I think she will work out fine for my daughter. She is broke to ride, but not for beginners. She was just born with turbo thrusters and wants to go, go, GO! I think we can handle her.
Finally, I am still trying to get the two miniature mares that need to be rescued. Suddenly we have lots of new faces around here! I hope the winter stays mild or we will have to buy some hay to keep them all fed! It is really satisfying to help out an animal, so no matter what, it is always worth it!
I am still trying to figure out the picture thing. I have lots of them, but my computer baffles me. I'll keep working on it! Linda
