If you were allowed to only breed one mare per year

I have been reading a post on an Appaloosa list I'm on and they posted a link to another horse website. The persn that runs that website says there ought to be a monitoring system going on to prevent "mass production" and over-population. They mostly complain about those big giant farms of Quarter Horse breeders.

That got me to thinking, what if there was suddenly a rule in the registry that only allowed you to breed for one registerable foal per year. Which one of your mares would you choose to breed to which one of your stallions, and why would you choose those particular horses?

I know there's always a way around a rule... and that some farms would just register foals in other people's names ... but what do you think it would do to the quality of registered stock if every farm was allowed to register only 5 foals per year?

I think if this happened it would only encourage those who breed unregistered animals to up their numbers to make up the difference. It would be nice if it meant because there were fewer horses flooding the market that the price for registered minis would go back up but I fear it would be the opposite that the non registered minis would only increase.

I thank God that I live in a country where we have the freedom to choose and make our decisions based on the market. There are always those who want to play god and dictate what others can and cannot do, but so far they have not gained control and I pray they never will.

That is an interesting question. I don't know that I could say... I've spent so much effort the past few years putting together a breeding herd and there are some crosses I am just dying to see... I decided years ago NOT to breed until I had in place what I now do in terms of the animals I think are nice enough to have a chance at producing what I like to see in a mini.

As a consolation answer, I can say that the foal I'm looking most forward to this year is a toss up between DunIT x Hope and Double x Big City (Erica's Buckeroo son)
default_biggrin.png
Hope is now at day 329 and really progressing. Double is down at Erica's and has a few more weeks I think. See them and the others I'm also pretty excited about here: WFM's 2008 Foals

I would be very against there being a limit on the number of registered foals a farm could produce each year. I wouldn't mind if the people who slap together breeding animals w/o much education kinda knocked it off but the trade off would be the loss of so many nice animals. Some of the farms I admire the most are producing dozens of foals or more each year that are assets to the breed.

I think that if that did happen, there is a possibility that the quality of registered stock could go up, but--- I also think that the *number* of UN-registered stock would also go up.

I don't think that would be a viable solution to the overpopulation problem, personally.

An interesting question, and I will answer with two choices.

The first thing I will say is that I would be using my new boy Darmond Boogerman's Bravado (thanks to Robin), as I am so excited to see what he will produce for me.

Then I would use him (in the future) on a filly I have who is out of a Shetland mare by my Falabella (Falabella Anselmo). This would be a sentimental breeding as the filly's dam was very special to me (so badly traumatised before I got her, that in the 12 years I owned her I never got to touch her!! But we had such a great understanding that touch was never needed. She simply followed me wherever I wanted her to go. She would accept a polo mint from my very stretched out hand, but that was it! She had many super foals for me and this filly is her last - and is so friendly and laid back you can never get rid of her when walking the fields!) So that would be my first choice and colt or filly the result would be a keeper.

Then from the breeding point of view - not sentimental - I would use little Dragon on my snowflake mare Ancaster Nokomis (TyroSpot Patch x Redlands Nutcracker). Nokomis' dam Nutty is one of my foundation mares and has always given me strong well formed offspring, good conformation and temperament - when you can see under all the hair and mud!! I will be really interested to see what an LWO+ pinto (Dragon) produces from a spotted mare.

Cant wait for 09

This is a fun question. However, don't think it would ever happen. The registry would go broke and put itself out of business. Hah !! Or, they would have to increase the cost of registrations per foal to hundreds of dollars to survive.

but if this happened, the costs of my vet bills would drop too, and I would have more funds to spend on carts, harnesses etc for fun. Something to think about. Wendy

Easy, I would bred my welsh sec B mare, who is an ex A circuit pony, to either my new Welsh stallion, or the best thing I could find. Very sale able foals, and something I always want to see in the pasture!

I don't believe it's a viable situation, for all the other reasons already stated, but an interesting thought.

Seems that this thread has taken a turn from your original question, but if I could only breed one mare that we own, I think that I would choose Little America's D S Miss Triumph.

The reason? Take a look at her foals:

If a picture is worth a thousand words, I have said enough.

P.S. Here she is as a foal with her dam, Komoko's Arapaho's Royal Rapsady.

I would breed Misty(in my Avatar) AGAIN to AnnaC's Dragon. This foal is DYNAMITE!

LOL!! Robin. It would be a very expensive foal, by the time either I had shipped Dragon back to you for a while (not a hope I'm afraid - he's staying right here!!) or you shipped Misty over to me (Dont think you would like to put her through that journey?) Plus they would both have to suffer a return trip!

But so glad you are happy with your little filly - just hoping that I can get a few similar ones appearing here in 09!

Hugs to Misty and her special little daughter from 'Daddy'

LOL - how quickly some will ruffle up over a hypothetical question!!
default_biggrin.png

I would breed my Ladyhawk to Candyland's Best Kept Secreat. Ladyhawk is a daughter of Lutes Komo BJ, 7 time national champion park horse, and she has his huge trot. Tex would only add to that!!

I would breed my mare Apache Hills Cheyenne to my Rowdy grandson. She gives us the most specatular foals!

Tony, don't stick a needle in that mare- she'll pop!!
default_biggrin.png
I LOVE her foals!

Lucy

If I had to chose, it would HB Fyre Lyte who is Calvin and Elles mother. I dont have picture of her but here are her babies. Full siblings.

Calvin

I love Tonys mare!!

Hmm intresting question.

It would be a toss up between Grove Creeks Miss Daisy and Skip of Gold SOS both bred to Marystown Cowboy Cool.

Miss Daisy

grovecreek1.jpg

She has produced a HOF Country Pleasure Horse, a AMHR Reserve National Halter horse plus my boy in the avatar. A couple years ago I decided I was going to sell her, she's such a pushy broad but then I shaved her son for the first time. I was very glad the two I priced her to didn't take her.

Skip

skipofgoldhead.jpg

Skip has only had one foal so far but look at that neck! I also bought Skips dam as well, both will be giving me my first Cowboy babies next month (fillies hopefully

At this moment I'd have to say that I'd breed my mare LM Cheyenne Dancer, she's a Little Wardance daughter and has consistantly thrown nice foals(for me and the previous owner). I only have one stallion but I think he's nice! Aloha Acres Heir to Magic, he's a full brother to Aloha Henry.

This is Dancer

last years foal with Heir, "Danny" Total Eclipse Dances on Heir

and her daughter that I'm looking forward to breeding to Heir next year!(so I guess I'd have to alternate....of course, I have a "first timer" this year that I'm anxious to see what they produce!).

This is "Lily" Total Eclipse Starlight Dancer.

and of course......the stallion we're breeding to! Heir:

HOLY COW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What beautiful horses !! That Miss Daisy is just way too cute

Tony, your mare sure knows how to build some gorgeous little babies!!

Hard question -- either Millstones Amazing, the mare in my avatar or

one of my Boogerman daghters, Grosshill Boogermans Secret Ballot, who has produced Millstones Loud and Clear:

and Millstones Sinful Sydney:

I only plan on having one baby a year. Lots of minis out there and I want to make sure I keep my herd numbers low. But that's my personal preference since I prefer the showing aspect.
default_smile.png

I do agree that it might raise mini numbers more. Plus the price of minis again. Who could afford to get a mini if there are only a limited number of registered ones there???

There just needs to be more responsible breeders out there. Too bad not everyone is. :DOH!
