we had an accident last fall with style my big black & white baby boy. with his halter and forgot to take it off and had the vet cut it off a few months ago. we didn't mean to hurt him like that,(still crying for that). we didn't know he'd grow that fast. since than i been really trying my best to work with him, but hes so touchy and my folks won't let me in the same stall with him afriad if he hurts me. now grandpa thinks its best to sale him to someone who can handle him as he is a "B" stallion and i only can handle so much since my leg tenden surgrey. i don't want to let him go, hes one of my babies. i need some prayers so i can pull him throw.

 i been weeping since grandpa told me the morning.

Gee how horrible for the poor horse to have had to live through that no wonder he's touchy...sorry l can't see past the fact someone could accidently or for any reason leave a halter on a horse that needed to be cut of.

I think you need to do what is best for you horse, and that would be to sell him to someone who can handle him and give him attention. I am sorry to say it was very neglectful to have left his halter on til it was so bad it had to be cut off. For safety sake never leave a halter on a horse when it is by itself - at any time.

 after the accident i been really checking the halters and taking them off after i work with them. i really didn't mean to hurt style. people make mistakes, and i'm learning from my mistake. i'm not doing this again. that why i been trying so hard to get his trust back.

Im sorry to have sounded harsh - but how long was the halter on him to make it that bad ?

since winter 2004 but thing is i don't understand is that he was with my friend for training and it was loose since last summer in 2005, could they grow that fast?

could horses have that overgrowth like humans?

We did have a similar situation, on a registered paso fino filly, years ago, raising her from birth, during the winter months,

We got it in good time.

We learnt the hard way also, No halters left on all the time.

There is a herbal spray called Schreiner's ( for horses and farm stock ) Herbal solution

Can be uses on open wounds, cuts, proud flesh, saddle sores, fungus or other skin disorders.

I have used it and it heals fast and believe me no scars.

Great for when you needed stitches and where to late.

thanks i'll get some, anything that'll help my baby boy.

I'll second the thumb's up for Schreiner's. I've used it and love it, it works wonders.

I'm sorry, but I just can't understand how anyone could leave a halter on a horse for so long without checking the fit that it would have to be cut off. Halters should really not even be left on unattended horses, period! I've watched several cases involving dogs and ingrown collars on "Animal Cops" and it's just sick. To me something like that is not an accident or a mistake, it is irresponsible and neglect. My advice would be to geld your colt and find him a new home with experienced horse owners who can help him mentally and physically recover from what he's gone through. I think you and your family should also look into getting some advice from a professional who can help you all take better care of the rest of your critters.

well not trying to be rude but no body is perfact in the whole world. and i'm still learning, and some will learn the hard way. i could never mean to hurt my babies. thats why i'm doing the best i can help and love my animals. thats why i come here to ask for help. day by day i'm learning. i look upon you all for help, and tips. and i plan on being a vet someday and i just need to learn. some day i too do want to be a professional for animals. but how can i if someone takes them away? i learned my lession well, and i promise God i never harm another animal again.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and know that I, too, have made mistakes and am probably making mistakes that could lead to problems down the road.

I have never liked leaving halters on horses for any reason and while I don't know that I can understand it, I am glad you got it straightened out and know better, now.

I'm sorry for the horse, though, that had to be an ordeal (think of them like people...would you wear a bra for over a year straight and never remove it even though you were growing/changing?...ouch and this was on his head).

I agree it is probably best to find someone to take him and earn his trust and bond with him, to try and give him a new lease on life. Sorry it had to be such an expensive lesson for you both.

This whole story is sad! For you and for the horse. I know people make mistakes, but I have to agree with your Grandpa, sad as it is! I know your very sorry, but I bet the horse is more sorry. I'm not flaming you, I just think your not ready to care for horses. Maybe when you get older and can see the horse everyday to care for them.

they been well care for. just i need to cut back now. with my surgrey that i had few months ago didn't help me much. and with college coming up. i need to find some homes for a few of my horses. i think i found one a home. now a few more. just having the worse start of 2006. its mind bubbling. i have to find homes for two boys now. but i like to wait til it warns up and clean them up. and keep working with them. my future show horses just have to wait.

all i really wanted is to be honest to you all, when my folks didn't want me too. and i needed some prayers to help get styles trust and to heal. i couldn't keep lying,it wasn't right. and i hope winter goses away sooner than i can get out more and work my horses. and hope to get this darn leg brace off. i just wanted things right. and wish God didn't gave me the stroke i had, or just gave me a sick mother with no known father. my step dad and i never get along. my cusins bug me til i'm in tears. i live with my grandfolks to be with my horses. and now with college and all the mind bubbling of the future plans. all i ask for was a better life with animals. i hope you all forgive me. and maybe understand how i feel in my life.

What I don't understand is how you wouldn't be able to tell if the halter was stuck on your horse? I handle my horses every day and usually bring them out of their stalls by leading them only with their halter. You should be able to fit your hand through the halter.

I wish you luck with your endeavors, but I do agree that he should go to another home with more experience so he can learn to trust once more.

i never noticed til he got touchly. than i called the vet right away and got it off. hes healing fine just worry about the scar and hair growing back. where can i get a halter with a bigger pad for the spot where the scar is?
