This past Saturday I knew my mare was close and I was watching for a bit before going to bed... of course I'd wake up a ton throughout the night to check her... but didn't need to! Right as I was about to go to sleep she was acting odd... next thing I know, water breaks! He was born 5 minutes to midnight.

Birth went fine although he was big and it was a TIGHT fit, she did have some tearing due to that, but nothing out of the ordinary... although the cord looked twisted to me? Tell me what you think.

Anyhow, his color suprised me. I test my horses, and so I knew the only choices were chestnut or black (and hopefully leopard like daddy). Out came a silver colt! I forgot, I had momma (chesnut varnish appy) tested before the test for silver came out lol! Guess now I know she has at least one copy of silver! Which is great, I LOOOOVE silver

He's an appy, but no spots (I'm sure will varnish out like mom).

But all was not well, turned out he was a dummy foal. We tried and tried after 2 hours of him not even looking for the milk bar, to help, but he just did not get it. Finally called the vet out who ended up tube feeding him, gave him DMSO and took some blood to test. We were all hopeful he'd get it, or at least drink from a bottle. But, nope! But not for lack of trying. He knew right where the udder was, just did not latch on. He would mouth the bottle, but not get anything out of it. So a couple hours later I called back the vet and we agreed he needed to go to the vet. Plus, we were EXHAUSTED and it would give us time to sleep!

Thankfully he did end up getting the bottle, and later, mom! He did stay two nights at the vet though, they wanted to make sure he made it past the 48 hour mark. We were THRILLED to bring him home yesterday, and he's doing well

He did need plasma as his IgG was only 400.

His name is a funny story. One of our mini aussies is, well, not too bright ;) We say he's special. His name is Toby. We call him several things, Toblerone, Tobis, Toby or not Toby, ect. Before the vet was even called hubby commented on how the colt reminded him of Toby, being not so bright... and joked we could call him Shakespeare (to be or not to be). To his surprise, I LOVED the name ;)

So here is CheyAuts ToBe Or Not ToBe, aka Shakespeare!

See the cord, does it look really twisted to you, or just me? I have a better pic, but I didn't upload it and it's not on this computer.

That cord does look twisted to me!

I am so glad he was able to come around and things worked out ok for you after all. That had to be pretty tense! Maybe our foals got mixed up and the stork delivered them to the wrong homes? I got a black out of a chestnut and black based silver dapple, and I really expected either chestnut or a silver.... and you got a silver from a chestnut roan and a black, LOL

Congrats on your new guy!

Congratulations! So glad things worked out alright and that he come around

Of course, he sure got a LOT of handling right when born haha ;) I do think his color is really neat, dark on top and lighter below... really curious to see what he ends up looking like! He's doing great, and Monday gets his blood checked again to make sure all is still well.
