My 15yr old daughter Courtney has been involved in FFA for a number of years and normally does citrus and horse judging and enviroment contests, however this year she was asked if she would like to show the chapter hog. Grudginly we agreed to allow her to do this.
When "Pig pig" first arrived at the barn he was a scrawny 65lb runt looking hog. She was very disappointed at what was chosen for her. He had also just been castrated and was in a very grumpy mood which I for one was glad to see as I did not want to become attached to him.
By day two his mood and demeanor changed and he was like a puppy dog. After many months of TLC and good food and care he weighed in yesterday at our county fair at 274lbs. He won 3rd place in his class of 9 hogs and then they were selected for the Sr. showmanship class.
During the showmanship class the judge eliminated everyone except her and her dear friend Alex. Then, Courtney's hog got on the rail and the judge announced that she didn't get him off the rail quick enough so she recieved the reserve, but it was great. We are very proud of her accopmlishments and hard work!!!
The down side of this is the reality of it all and for that reason we will never do this again. Too heartbreaking as we are all so attached to this hog. His brown spots are all in the shapes of hearts which I find ironic as he will be auctioned on the 14th.
To bring this scrawny hog up so far (he had the highest weight gain overall) and to have the judge tell her what an awesome hog he is and exactly what he likes to see and to compliment her on his condition, was such an honor.
During his interview with her, her hog got into a blistering rip roaring fight with another hog that kept after him. The guys got them seperated and broke up and Pig Pig just trotted back over to Courtney and stood next to her for the remainder of her interview with the judge.
I'm so proud of her!!! (Him too)
