Sorry about your little filly...

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. It just seems like there are times things happen for no apparent reason. I lost a filly at 7 months of age this past winter for no apparent reason either. She dies in my arms on the way to the vet clinic. At least she left knowing she was loved, which so many horses never get a chance to know. (((HUGS))) to you. Corinne

THANK YOU EVERYONE!! I dont know what happened to her.. she was so healthy and full of spunk. We are not having an autopsy done. As most of the time the results come back normal or they dont know. I would rather just think she was just put her for a short while and then God called her back to him. She knew she was loved, she was a very spoiled horse. Her 1/2 sister is very lost tonight without her. She seems of depressed. I still just cant believe she went so fast, which in a way I am thankful for as she didnt suffer. She came so far since we bought her in September, from being afraid and very shy to being a pushy, spoiled brat. My vet said it could have been a flu, or an infection. He is as stumped as I am about this. He said there is nothing out of the ordinary going around. He even called the other "big animal vet" around here and he said the same. I think I have checked them all at least 100 times today making sure they are all ok. I am going to do several night checks for the next few weeks as well just to make sure the other ones are ok and nothing like this happens to them..

Thank You All Again.. you dont know how much it means to me...

Sherry

That's such a shock when they were fine the night before. I hope you find out what happened to her. My condolences on the loss of your lovely filly. I'm glad you were able to hold her in your arms before she passed.

Hi, sorry to hear about your loss. I had a similar experience yesterday. In morning everthing was fine, put the horses out as usual. Put the two 2005 mini fillies in my stallion's paddock, he stayed in barn. I alternate them. Anyway went down around 2:30p.m and Lucy was lying down. Didn't think to much of it. Went in and she got up. Took her to barn, went back for Sky. Anyway as I was bringing Sky in. They share a stall, Lucy laid down again and wasn't eating her hay which is not normal for her. My first thought was colic, but she got up after a few miniutes and had a small poop, stayed up for a few minutes and laid down again. I watched her for 20 minutes then she had another small poop. I felt her, she was very cold. So I took her out of the stall, lead her to the heater which is only on when we are there and unplugged when we are not. I plugged it in and put Lucy in front of it. She leaned toward it, had her face toward it, then moved so her side was facing it and so on. I rubbed her with a towel. Then after her being in front of the heater for 15 minutes she din't want to leave it behind to go back to her stall. She went in stall, didn't lie down and I left to go eat supper. Went back and she was eating hay and looked very alert and perky. I checked her again a hour later and she was grooming Sky so I left her for the night. Went down today and she was fine, whinnied at me, but was her stubborn self and a pain to put out. I decided she needed to go out instead of my stallion as it was really warm today. We kept and eye on her all day and she was running and playing with Sky. Then had my brother lead her to the barn as she likes him, makes it look so easy. For me she plants all 4 feet and braces herself, not with my brother though. Go figure.

Anyway tonight she was fine and ate her hay right away.

I am so sorry to hear about your filly! I know how much that hurts.

Take care and I hope you find out what happened to her.

Thanks again to everyone who has replied.. I have done much thinking and soul searching and it is with a very heavy heart and sadness that I have come to the conclusion I am selling all of my horses, except for the 2 that belongs to my daughters.. I cant take this heartache.

Oh Sherry, please don't make any hasty decisions. I know the heartache of suddenly losing a beloved horse, I know how frightening and discouraging it is, but... if you love your horses, well like I tell my daughters "it's better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all" (not my quote, is it Shakespeare?) but so true.

All I'm saying is wait a bit before you make any decisions like this. Grief can make one do things that we may later regret. {{{hugs}}}

I'm so sorry............just heartbreaking. Of course we want you to hang on, but it's a VERY personal decision that no one but you can make.

Sherry,

Hugs for you as you mourn the loss of your precious little Missy.

I am so sorry!
