To make a long story short I am going to be the primary "mare watcher" here at the farm as hubby just got a new job and NEEDS his sleep badly for it to perform well and safely. If I can find someone to buddy up with then I would be getting the dazzle device and get hooked up with MareStare. . .That being said, I am thinking of changing my sleep pattern from 10pm to 6am to a new pattern of 9AM to 5PM so that way I can be up all night with the mares. . .but this leaves me with a problem.

I won't have anyone to watch from 9AM to 5PM but I am wondering if maybe there is a group of people that watch each others cameras over the internet while the other person can sleep? If so - I could definitely watch from 5PM to 9AM (my sleep time) while someone else sleeps and then they watch during my sleep time. Could even do multiple farm's cameras if needed as I have a VERY LARGE computer screen so could watch a maximum of 5 others, and still leave one space for my mares.

If there is already a "group" that does this, could someone point me the way? If I can't find a buddy per say then I am just going to have to SUCK IT UP and take little naps and be a cranky little woman

With Marestare, you may have hundreds of people watching your mare(s) at any given time, so you should be able to sleep when you normally do.

I'm not on Marestare, but with a camera and an Equipage, I can sleep at night when I normally do.

If you use marestare a lot of their people watch cams especially if you ask

I always try to watch those that need help! Let me know when yours will be up.

I will be on foal patrol starting in March

I am also very blessed that I have a group of women on a quilting forum (thanks karla!) that help watch mine.

It does help a lot as we all live in different time zones

Becky:

I wish I had an equipage or something like it - that's on my christmas list for this year! Until next season I'm just going to have to do with my cameras and possibly marestare.

KayKay:

My mares are all due in February so I will be announcing then about when ones are "close" and I will definately let you know!!

Marestare is great, especially at night. Last year I had a call on the house phone and cell phone BEFORE the pager went off (all within a minute. I dont think as many folks watch it during the day as I did not get a call when my other mare went into labor, but the breeder alert called my cell and I could check online and see she was down and pushing.

I have buddied up with others on Mare Stare, but more likely, if you get on the message board there and ask for help you will have plenty of watchers. I have had calls from Europe and also run into people at horse shows that said they saw Max's birth! I highly recommend an Equipage (or similar) but if that is too pricey, you could also use a foal buzzer ($55) and baby monitor. Testing the milk will also narrow down the window so you should lose less sleep.

I am going to look into the foal buzzers and see what I can find. I don't "test" the milk with strips anymore I just check the consistency and color and that works good.

What kind of baby monitor works best? My foaling barn is approximately 100ft. away from my room where I "mare stare" so would need something to reach that far........any ideas?

My main concern is I have a mare that is a maiden and then I have a second mare who is a proven "red bag delivery" mare.

I am on marestare most of the day except when taking the kids to and from school or therapy appointments. I have my mare on this year. Definitely get into the chat room or post on the message board what you need.
