My minis seem to like the orange flavor wal mart brand with sugar but I got the sugar free this time but have not opened it yet. Can you tell me what kind you use?

I noticed that the people dose is different on the sugar free than the regular, so if you use sugar free how much do you use? With the regular I was using 1/4 cup one time a day for 1 week a month. Or should I take the sugar free back and exchange it?

I guess the question is if they will eat the sugar free version or not. If they do, it all works the same. Please let us know if they eat it just as well. My minis LOVE the orange flavor metamucil( with the sugar) They eat it like candy.

We've always used the sugar free orange flavored, they LOVE it...they each get two heaping tablespoons here.

I know that the first ingredient in the sugar free is psyllium and in the other it's sugar. So I would use the sugar free as psyllium is what you want. My Wal Mart doesn't seem to be carrying the sugar free Equate brand, so I am going to have to keep looking.

For those of you using the sugar free or the regular with sugar, how frequently do you give this to your minis?

I use the regular orange one with sugar. I don't want them to have that harmful artificial stuff. My vet said five consecutive days every month, 5T for a big horse, so I give mine 2 1/2 T. I would think it would be the same dosage whether it's the regular of sugar-free.

I have used sugar free with no problem of them eating it. So that is what I use no need to add more sugar to an animals diet.

Sugar free contains aspartame, so it depends on how you feel about your horses eating aspartame.

I personally use EquiAid powder, and mix it with a little rice bran and some LMF Lo Carb Complete.

It is the Only product that will clean Sand out of the intestinal track..It is the Only product that adheres to the sand for elimination out of the body. It is sticky and the sand sticks to it..This then helps prevent Sand Colic.

yes please someone tell l have never heard of a horse having to be given that. sounds like it must not be common or l'm sure l would have been told somewhere along the line before reading on here.

oh dear l see their was an answer before l posted l must not have noticed in time. but now l know also and we have no sand here only clay.

It isn't the Metamucil that does the trick. It is the psyllium in the metamucil that adheres to the sand. Minis in sandy areas are prone to sand colic. When they graze or eat off the ground they inherently pick up sand. The sand will form into balls in their intestines and can cause a blockage and colic.

The psyllium made for horses is pretty pricey. People (and vets) have discovered that the Metamucil product is made with psyllium and is much more affordable than the horse product.

When the psyllium gets wet it turns into this sticky jelly type stuff. Theory is that in the intestines it clings to sand pebbles and flushes them out of the system.

Even horses in areas that have clay soil can pick up sand, so it sure wouldn't hurt to do psyllium treatments. Either an equine version or Metamucil. You might want to discuss this with your vet.
