Has anyones vet ever mentioned this for their horses eye ulcers or just sore yucky eyes??

Thanks. I forgot to ask her what the active ingredient in it was.

Heidi

Haven't heard of using it- it is an antifungal/yeast but not sure about how well it would address any possible bacterial component?

I guess the only 'different' kind of eye meds our veterinary opthalmologist has told us to use is Silver Sulfadiazine. It is a burn cream for the skin, but if a horse can manage it, then we use it now, but only on the advice of the vet specialist. It covers both fungal and is a broad spectrum antibacterial. But, we only use it when given the ok by our vets.

I would not put Monistat 7 in an eye, I have used it for fungus problems before. We have only used the opthalmic triple antibiotic drops or cream for eyes before. Be sure the cream does not have a steroid in it, if there is a cut or scratch on the eye it is not good to use a steroid.

I wouldn't use Monistat unless it was specifically a fungal infection--not sure eyes get that? If they do I've never had it happen

I do use penicillin (the plain injectable form) for injured or goopy eyes--learned that one from my vet (actually more than one vet clinic in the area use that for treating eyes). If they're absolutely sure that there is no damage to the cornea they use Special Formula. If there's an ulcer or any doubt if there is/isn't then they don't use the Special Formula, as it does contain a corticosteroid. In those cases they use the penicillin. I just go with the penicillin--I always have Pro-Pen on hand anyway--it's far easier to apply and I find that it is much more effective than any of the eye ointments I've ever used.

Im glad I asked on here. Thank you. I was having 2nd thoughts after the vet told me and after I went and purchased it. Will call her in the A.M. and mention all your thoughts and see what she says. Until then there will be no

Monistat. Thanks for your thoughts on this

Noooooo I would not use that!

However, the lady in my barn does use it for those unsightly ear fungi. Clears it right up.

Eyes, I would only use a specific ophthalmic ointment...

It sounds like your Vet was thinking you asked her/him something else. There is specific eye medicines to use on a horse depending on what the problem is. I would not use that one either. In fact the triple antibiotic may not be what you need either if their is an ulcer in the eye. Best to have the Vet, look at it first.

OMG! Do NOT put it in your horse's eyes.

NEVER put anything that is not marked OPTHALMIC.

Corneas frequently get fungal infections after corneal abrasions and abcesses. I would NOT use it even if a vet recomended it ( He MUST have been thinking of something else!). There are specific opthalmic drops made for just that.

Hmmmm...... I'd like to hear more from your vet. There are products used for eye treatment that aren't traditional opthalmic remedies. Silver Sulfadiazine is one as Peggy (Albahurst) mentioned. I'd like to know more about using Monistat 7 for fungal eye infections.

I wouldn't use it for eye fungus, but ear fungus..go right ahead. It also works on ringworm, as ringworm is not a worm, but a fungus. I had a rescued colt and used it on his spots. I don't think he had ringworm, but he was so wormy and tiny that i decided to cover my bases.

Actually, I have heard of it being used in horse eyes for fungal infections, and quite effectively too (from a vet ophthalmologist). HOWEVER, as with all eye meds, you have to be very careful with applying anything to your horse's eye, and definitely only under a vet's instruction. Fungal eye infections are pretty rare in horses (at least, around here), so that may be why some have never heard of it being used.

Under the direction of your vet Monistat can be used in eyes for fungal keratitis. You need to find out if you have fungus as Monistat will not treat bacterial infections and triple antibiotic will not treat fungal infections. Proper diagnosis is the key first step. Don't put anything in your horse's eye without having it examined by your vet.

Thank you for your thoughts, prior to reading the last 2 posts I emailed this to my vet voicing my concerns about what she suggested. She had seen my horse prior and couldnt see anything wrong except for watery runny eye. It was then she suggested the Mon. thinking it may be some sort of fungal thing going on. She said she has used it many times successly in the treatment of ulcers as well and said that it would be perfectly safe even if no ulcer or fungal going on. She said to use it 1x daily for 5 days. Anyway she is supposed to fax me a couple of reports on using Mon. 7 on horses and will pass on the info when I get it. Im glad I listened to you guys and took the extra effort to find out just why this is supposed to help.Hopefully I will have my answer soon

Dream and MiniHGal ...... I was so happy that at least someone had at least heard of using Mon 7 for eyes. Although I am still not using it at least now I can look into it with an open mind.
