Jessi, you guys are moving to KY????!!! How come? Man, that is going to be one loooooong drive!!!
We have fallen in love with Ky, and all it's green horseyness ;) And I HATE our summers here. Ky summers are cooler, and I don't mind the humidity they have there. I DO love Az and the desert, but can't WAIT to be in Ky

Plus, we can afford a LOT more land there.

Nope I am not kidding and it was much worse than I described because I left out a lot of details.

We had two trailers but could not haul either one of them because Hus drove a giant U-haul and drug his van behind it and I drove my truck and hauled a bumper U-haul behind that one so we had to sell our trailers.

Anyhow, I would highly suggest that someone go ahead first, like we had planned to do all along, and prepare the property before you brought the animals. The problem there is you really cannot do anything to it until you legally close on it, but hey, its Tennessee so we did, we had no other choice because we had to get the horses out of that stable and home. It's all about co-ordination' easier said than done. But don't forget this was not a latch-key farm or house so that was a whole lot of the problem too along with that stupid idiot shipper. Do you have any idea what those guys charge to haul big horses???? It ain't cheap.

Our plans are to send (or haul ourselves) the horses a couple of weeks or so before us, even maybe a month ahead of time. The forum is awesome...many people have offered to board our guys during the transition period so that we can get everything squared away without having to worry about the boys being here and us getting to closing and everything else that comes with the move. When you make a move there is so much going on and your head is spinning that the last thing you need is to worry about if your scheduling will coincide with your hauler. Then we have two big dogs, a cat and possibly some livestock we will need to move. The dogs are not a problem because they will go everywhere we go, even the hotels...but the other critters leaves a small amount to worry about than them PLUS the horses.

When I moved from my parents to my current place there were no paddocks. It was the middle of winter. We moved the minis and they had to stay in the barn for a number of months. We hand walked them for exercise. We left my riding horses at my parents until we had paddocks built. Wasn't to bad.

A excellent shipper is Mary Mykytyn. She would ship your entire herd. She treats your horses like one of her own. I shipped a colt up from Arkansas with her, was on the trailer for 4 days and arrived in perfect shape. I also shipped a mini mare in foal from Ontario to Quebec with her and also arrived in great shape. She answers her e-mails within days of you e-mailing.

Don't mean to be a pessimist but I would certainly think twice about sending my horses ahead of me. What happens if the sale doesn't go through as planned?? Sooo many things could happen. For example....I signed a contract on this place without actually seeing it before I moved back. The day I got here (obviously wanting to take a look at what I had agreed to buy) the sellers said it was too "inconvenient" for me to come over then and that I needed to wait til the day of closing.

I told the realtor to tell them that the deal wasn't completed yet and unless I saw the place that day there would be no closing. I got to see the place and loved it so it all worked out well. But what if it hadn't? IMO having possession of your new place should come before anything else.

we will be sure of what we are getting for sure its not so far of a drive not to be sure

but I think we will have to have a hauler pick up the day of closing (or make arrangements with new owner)

and then all leave on the same day sounds so hard to co ordinate

as we both would have to be here for closing to sign paperwork

You could also get with the attorney for one of you to sign a limited power of attorney and only one would have to stay for closing.

I know when we moved here the owners requested a few days for moving before we could move in. And they didn't even have horses. Seems to be common in this part as I have heard of it many times now.

All will work out. Just keep probing for all your options.

Jessi,

What part of Kentucky? I think im moving down in May or June. I'll be just below Lexington. I just came across some land the other day while surfing. i think it was like 21 or 22 acres for $40K in western KY (if it's anything your interested in i can send you the link) had a few photo's and it looked like quite a bit of it was feild.. Land prices seem to be going down now's definatly the time to shop.

What you could do is when you have a contract on your house the ask the buyer if they would consider letting you "rent " for x number of days after closing. You may find it helps to sell your house because alot of buyers need to sell their house before they can by yours. By having you as a "renter" it bides them time and you time. Then someone can go ahead and get things ready while one of you stays back. As far as moving, I would move everyone at once. Costly yes, but better IMO. I would actually follow the hauler on moving, as a said EVERYONE moves together

Not sure just yet, but I want to be somewhat close to Lexington. What town/city are you going to? I found some places I liked south west of Lexington, but I forget what they're called (I do have them written down).

I"ll be in Cartersville which is about an hour directly south of Lexington. right next to Berea. You need to hurry up and move so I'll have a mini friend! lol

Yep! Been there, done that twice in the last 3 years! (About 550 miles each time.) It is a bit stressful working out all the details, but I'm happy to say that both times things went pretty smoothly. A couple of key things that made the whole process a lot easier:

  • Retained possession of property we were leaving for at least 30 days.
  • Had a professional moving company move our household items.
In both cases, the place we were moving to had existing barns.

The first move we took half the animals with us when we drove down, and left the other half in the care of friends for about two weeks.

The second move we had more animals and Mike hadn't been transferred yet. So, it took three trips, but basically each weekend, I'd go get another load of horses to take to the new place. Luckily, I already knew people at the new place to watch the horses at the new place over the weekends I was picking up more.

We successfully moved mares with foals, pregnant mares, stallions, geldings, llamas, dogs, cats, and hamsters! But that doesn't mean I want to do it again anytime soon.

Good luck!

We moved about a 7 hour drive away. Closed on the house we were selling on the 2nd, and the one we were buying on the 3rd, so no buffer and actually had to stay at my mom's the night of the 2nd. What worked for us was to board the horses at our original location with someone we really trusted. Sure, it cost some, but it was worth the peace of mind to be able to go up to the new place and take about 2 weeks to put up fences (this was early summer and a deposit had already been put on the barn which was built by fall). When we were ready, I had a professional shipper go get the horses and bring them to me (a clydesdale, a pony and two minis...plus their feeders). I had brought the horse trailer up to the new place with me hauling my extra stall mats (too valuable to leave behind) and all the other stuff you have when you own horses.

Good luck on your move. Hopefully you can figure out how to do it with a minimum of difficulty!!

I am sorry that you are moving, although I envy you going to Va. We would like too also. I have no words of wisdom except Good luck and I hope all goes well.

Others seem to try to thin their herd a bit before the move, hopefully all your babies will sell quickly!
