This afternoon my friends husband calls me and says one of her mares was acting funny and would I come over. He said she was up and down. I figured she was either colicing or was aborting. I got there about 7 min. after he called and she was on her side and the sack was coming out. I went in to the mare and the foal was upside down so with each contraction I pulled the little guy out. It was a really nice looking I belive black colt. When he came out the cord was twisted tight like someone wringing out a towel. Then it was wraped 2x's around his hips. He was due March 25th. We took the mare to the vet had her flushed and got some antibiotics. She should be fine and it is a sad thing to tell my friend that is out of town.

I am sorry, i had a mare abort this week too that was in foal, she had actually aborted back in September and was carrying twins and ultrasound in foal back in December, but i knew there was about a 50/50 chance on her taking the remaining foal full term, will keep her up in the barn and show her this year.

I just always think that some things happen for a reason...she must have been ment to show this year

I'm so sorry to you both! The first mare I've ever bred is due in June. Honestly, every morning when I go out to the barn, I breath a sigh of relief that she has not aborted. Gosh, it seems to happen so often. I'm so sorry to all involved and I hope the mares are fine....

I'm so sorry. I know its such a hard thing to go through. I went through it yesturday and am still numb. It takes so much and such a long time to make a baby and it can all be over and gone so quickly.

Katiean I'm sorry to hear about your friend's foal. Leeana I'm sorry you lost your foal too. I bet you are really bummed but you continue to have a good outlook and I admire you for that.

Our sympathy to the people who have had these losses.

I know it's been on another thread, but so many are talking about the tightly twisted cords.

Is it happening just prior to the abort whern the mares are up and down and rolling so much?

I get nervous sometimes when my pregnant mares are rolling, but I understand the rolling helps position things?

Again , very sorry.

How close was she to her foal date? Was it in the 6-8 week window before she was due? We have discussed this among ourselves and it is interesting to have it out on the forum where thousands of horses are available to track this and now people are aware and responding.

We say it every year that breeding minis is not for the faint of heart and it seems that all we hear are the troubles everyone has but remember that this forum has thousands of members. Very few members are single horse owners and if anyone has a problem this is where we bring it. This is where we learn and have the knowledge of very experienced members to help us during hard times.

Well, I'm right there too

I came home from work yesterday and when I went to the barns to start cleaning stalls I saw one of my mares with her tail raised slightly and could see the sack hanging out. She wasn't due till mid March and she appeared to be exhausted so she must have been struggling for hours.

I reacted as quickly as I could to help her but when I saw no legs I went in and found that the foal was all twisted. I couldn't reposition it so I called the vet.

My local vet tried and also failed so off to the emergency hospital we went. After much work they got HER (a beautiful filly) out but as you all know it was too late for the foal and my mare had to stay overnight... It was a pretty bad dystocia and the foal was so twisted that the vets thought there were twins inside because legs seemed to be twisted everywhere..but I just got off the phone with the emergency hospital and they said that my mare is okay.

I have no idea what caused this at this time.

I'm sorry for everyone having to deal with this heartbreak. It makes me feel like something just sucked all the energy and wind right out of my body. I cannot imagine what my poor mare is feeling. Thank Goodness she is okay.

The mare was due March 25th. We don't know why the cord was twisted so tight.

Im so sorry for u all. As I posted in the last thread of this type I lost a filly too that was aborted late last year. She would have been due early in 09. Didnt see any problems, who knows why? And it usually is beautiful fillies we lose too.
