No....not a horse this time. It's our Pyrenees mix "Woody". I noticed a couple weeks ago that he had open wounds on both ears (in back at the fold where they flop over). I can only assume this was caused by flies...they were really bad at that time. I usually rub some fly spray on the dogs muzzles where the flies tend to bite them, but never thought about checking their ears. Our other Pyrenees has never had any problems with flies in this area.
Anyway....I sprayed the wounds on both ears with "Cut-Heal" & wiped down his entire head & ears with fly spray.
Of course, he immediately ran outside & started rubbing his ears in the DIRT!
I've repeated this process over & over & have tried putting other things (like Swat) on that may not "irritate" as much. The one ear has almost healed completely....but he is constantly re-opening the wound on the other. I'm half afraid to put ANYTHING on it now...as it immediately makes him want to rub it & rub it, which just makes it worse. But, if I don't do anything, the flies get after it & irritate him...making him rub it anyway. I'm so afraid he is eventually going to get a really bad infection if we can't get this healed.
The open area is a little smaller than a quarter.
I need some ideas, guys. Are there any antibiotic creams that wouldn't irritate the area, making him rub it?
I do have an Elizabethian collar, but I found from experience with our other Pyr, that is NOT a good thing to use on barn dogs where there is no way to confine them. When our other Pyr, Barney was neutered, we put one on him so he wouldn't like the surgical site, and he kept trying to get it off by rubbing it on things & kept getting himself stuck in gates, panels, doors....you name it! We finally had to just remove it for his own safety.
