Greetings!

My son has emotional problems, mostly because Daddy is active duty military, and it's just me and the horses and the kids. I have tried and tired to find him a right place in our public school system. I get fustrated, because I don't think he is getting a proper education, and considering we live in Florida.. (how do you do a groan on here?) it doesn't inspire confidence.

So I tried various US homeschooling methods and find most are linked to religion of some sort, which is a whole new bag of problems, because it's usually not linked to a church we go to.

Anyway, I found a homeschool program from the U.K. that costs (where's the lbs sterling sign on this keyboard??) it costs 100 lbs sterling. I'm not sure if that's expensive or not... I'm thinking it's very reasonable. In fact, I think it's so reasonable, that next year, I could have two children in the program, or maybe all three.

The email I recieved was not clear how grades work in the U.K. So could anyone be so kind as to give me a ball park figure on approx. what 100 pounds sterling is in US dollars, and how do grades work in the U.K. I get the impression that you don't have grades K-12 as we do in the U.S.

Very exhausted ... fustrated Mom ... needs help...

Thanks so much in advance...

Lynn W

As much as my son enjoys the author of the Harry Potter books, I wish our public school would mention other authors too. The theory here seems to be... if the kids like it... it's good literature.... aarrggh... Please help!!!

Here's a currency converter that may help you. According to this, and Fizz could confirm if it's not accurate, it calculates one pound as being equivalent to $1.82 USD

I am wondering why you don't think your son is getting a proper education in Florida.

Our public school system in Florida was excellent and so were the teachers. I can't say enough good things about it. I think you should give it another try.

I have a very high regard for teachers. To me, they are overworked, and underpaid and take a lot of non-sense from both kids and their parents that don't have any respect for them and some are just so very unreasonable.

When we moved to Tennessee, I found that I really appreciated it in Florida so much more as these schools here were not anywhere near the quality that we left behind in Florida. They were very behind in many ways. My kids were in some cases, two years ahead of themselves here in some acedemics.

Until recently, when the Tennessee began the lottery, they are now playing catch up and do have more to offer and things are really improving.

Do not forget that in the South, this is the Bible Belt. And many things are religion based. It always does not mean that they will push another religion at you if you ask them not to and to omit that part of the program.

I find that no matter what school you are in, it's very important to keep that one on one contact with all the teachers, have planned conferences frequently, and be a part of as many activities as possible where you would be interacting on a regular basis.

You may even might consider having your son's doctor send him for a emotional profile to see if he has any learning disabilities or ADD or anything like that which would be a reason if he isn't doing very well. I have one here with ADHD and learning disabilites that is a daily struggle/battle. He stays on an emotional rollercoaster.

£100.00 (there it is over the three) is approx. $180.00- depending on the exchange rate which varies from day to day!!
