I have a 5 month old filly that I am interested in showing. I took her to one yesterday, and there was only one other in the ring, and she got 2nd. It was her first show. I have been working with her on standing and the pose. She did very well and once set up, she just stood there and posed for the judge the whole time, also in grand and reserve. The question is what can I do to inprove her. I am trying to find out how much sweat time and trot time she needs.

She gets fed a handful of each below items twice a day:

C.A. Sweet

complete advantage

ultium

sunflower seeds

beet pult

show calf

alfalfa pellets

aminty

Is this too much or not enough.

Everything in it has something good for her, but nothing has everything.

She also gets 1/4 flake Alfalfa hay

Thank you

Don't you just absolutely HATE when there are only 2 in the ring - you are either first or last! I wouldn't let it shake your faith in your horse though. If you email me your picture I can post it for you and email you directions on how to post for yourself. As far as feeding goes I am not a great one to ask because I tend to believe in the KISS method but it does seem to me that you are overdoing it a little. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about some of the feeds you mention will come on and give you some direction.

For the picture, you can sign up with a photo web host like Photobucket.com for free, upload your pictures there, than post here.

I don't show, so can't help you sweating and exercising for show conditioning.

Sounds like a pretty complicated feeding program; why not keep it simple and feed a junior or growth feed or just a couple of the products mentioned (I don't know enough about any of the feeds mentioned to make a recommendation). But, feeds should be fed by weight, not a handful of this or a cup of that. Horses need 2-3% of their bodyweight per day in feed (forage and concentrates), of that at least 1% should be forage (hay, grass, pellets, cubes).

I'm sure in no time, someone more knowledgeable will post with ideas and information.

IMO a foal belongs in a field, being a baby, having fun and getting filthy dirty.

That is where all my weanling's are and that is where they will stay till nest April.

No sweating or training for foals, not from me.

They are only just halter training(although they are TOTALLY handled and tame)

Turn her out, feed her well (Not nearly enough hay for a growing baby, by the way, mine are out on knee deep grass ) and let her be herself until next year.

Good Luck, she is a nice animal, potentially.

I agree with Jane.

My weanling show horses are pretty much out all the time except at night w/mom (or a buddy if they are old enough to be weaned). Free choice hay/grass, and a big pile of LMF Development feed, salt lick and fresh water. They also get beet pulp over their grain, which is a complete grain, and they eat enough of it to get the nutritional recommendations for their age.

I DO NOT WORK or SWEAT a weanling. Ever. I DO, however, halter break them, teach them to stand tied, be handled and worked with as in picking hooves and grooming, clipping, bathing. On the older weanies, we work on "whoa" and that is all.

I have a theory that the ones that are fed well just don't usually get the huge bloaty belly and I RARELY see a "fat" weanling even though I hear all the time how fat they are, it's usually a largish belly from malnutrition or worms, I would guess?

Either way, more turnout time, free choice good quality hay and no work above about two to five minutes and that should be in a free lungeing (large arena/pasture) area. They will play and run enough on their own, IMO, and don't need to be working on a line or in a small tight circle.

Good luck with her, she's pretty!

Thanks for the replies. She is not stalled she is in a 50x80 turnout 24/7, for weaning only, and she also gets about 3 hours in a larger feild a day. I ride a bike with her for about 1/2 mile if that every other day. She does not have any buddys, she is the only baby we have, and the other minis are a stallion and her mom.

I am trying to shrink the number of items in her feed, anything in your opinion she does not need.

I raise and show large horses so minis are still new to me. I have visited mini farms and shows and saw the way they prepared there foals. Thats why i asked about sweating.

Thanks again

This feeding seems so complicated. I'm pretty sure that complete advantage is a beet pulp based feed; so feeding it and beet pulp is really doubling up on beet pulp (not necessarily a bad thing). Also, she's getting alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets; I'd just go with one or the other, preferrably the hay for the long stem roughage factor. I can't really do much to help simiplify the feed plan, as I haven't heard of too many of the feeds listed (ok, so I know what sunflower seeds, alfalfa pellets and beet pulp are; the name brand stuff isn't available here, nor have I heard of most of them.)

If I were you, I'd probably go with just a growth or junior feed (plus hay or pasture) til she's a year old; it should have all she needs in it and it's simple to feed.

Although, I've got to admit she looks pretty darn nice on her current feed plan...

I just love to keep it simple; mine all get a ration balancer, grass hay, BOSS and if needed, plain oats.

I'm no expert but having just gone thru the "first weanling" thing myself, I can simpathize with you about what to do. Hope some of the others can comment on the feed thing. As for my filly I gave her 1/2 c. steamed rolled (because I also use them for my old guy) oats, 1/2 cup (figures out that way on the package) of Purina "Born to Win", and about 2 1/2 lb. hay (in the summer 1 3/4 and 1 to1 1/2hr. pasture for the remaining) because that's what it figures out for my full grown 3 yr old who's about 200 lb.

As for the "training" she looks like you've done a good job. I worked on leading, then whoa, then feet position, and all this over the winter so by the time she was a "yearling" she was ready for the arena - mostly! LOL

Come spring we started on obstacles as she seemed interested. She soaks up new information so quickly it's fun to work with her. For this first year she's been pretty close to unbeatable in obstacle halter mostly because she trusts me (and other people) so much.

So you are on the right track wanting to work with her just don't push too hard. Keep the training sessons short 15 or 20 min. For exercise to build up muscles long troting or walking for a short time but no round penning. The best thing I was told for the rear muscles is backing and teaching them to side pass or turn on the forehand.

The reason I am wanting to start her so early in conditioning is b/c there are two large shows coming in late Sept. so I am wanting her to look her best.

I have been looking to change her over to Eq. J.

Show Caff- hay ground up mixed with molasses for slowing down there eating time and there coats.

I am going to take her off the C.A., complete advantage and ultium.

Aminty- is a special feed additive for mares and foals.

Also what is BOSS, I have never heard of it.

Thank you for your inputs.
