I am trying out a new business venture, a petfinding service.

The problem is, I'm not sure exactly how much to charge. I have a rough idea of what I want to charge, but would like opinions.

This service will include about one hour of searching every day. I will basically do all the legwork for my client. I will contact the sellers, inquire about all the information about the animal and every day I will send an email to the client to give him/her the information that I have gathered for that day. Which ever animals sound like they have the most potential, I will (if the client would like me to) go and do a preliminary view of the animal and narrow down the choices, tell the client what I have discovered and at that point whichever animals the client is most interested in, they will then go and view the animal themselves and make the final decision.

For all of this work on my part I think that the following price base:

Ad finding (free animal): $20/two week period ($1.50/day)

Ad finding (non-free): $50/two week period ($3.55/day)

After one week: $10/week

Viewing an animal: $10 + gas

If animal is purchased: 10% commission

If purchase price is over $2000: -base price

I would like opinions on the price please.

Sounds like a neat idea and a fun business, but is there a call for it in your area? I can see someone wanting to hire you in a large city situation, but ......?

Have NO idea about your fee schedule. It sounds a little confusing to me.

Would love to know more about the service, though!

PS: Had a thought.....what if you are asked to do a search for a pet and the people are total idiots/morons and it's obvious they should NEVER own an animal? What do you do?

The way I do it is a base price ($20 or $50-depending on whether the animal is a purchase or a free pet) for a two week period, then if it takes longer than 2 weeks, it is an extra $20 per week. I don't intend for it to take longer than 2 weeks, but if the client is picky it may take longer lol. If they would like me to go take a look at several animals, so they don't waste their time looking at potentially inadequate animals, it is $10 (no matter where it is) plus gas money. When they purchase an animal, I receive a 10% commission for finding that animal for them.

If I thought that they should not own an animal, then morally, I will be forced to tell them I could not help them.

Our Poodle club sponsored something like this years ago. But instead of charging the person who got the pet the breeder of the pet paid a % of the sale. We also kept a breeders stud book of all breeds and would do referrals for a set fee. We made enough money doing it to sponser a show every 6 months, not too bad.
