Keeper,, so they(Gov) didn't allow 10% GMO products?

The last news letter said that they were going to.

I know some folks at the Oregon Tilth,, and they said they would not change their rules just because the Gov does. They keep to higher standards. Last time I checked the Oregon Tilth started way before the Gov got their fingers into things.

Here is a link to other worries some of the other Forums are facing.

All this goings on is really sad.

This months Countryside magazine has a good simple article on the NSIA.

Funny how this post has gone over to what is Natural or not...And nothing about the NSIA,,Hmmm Must be nobody is worried about that ID stuff.. Which is of course is the truth, because it is just no big deal.

This has been discussed on here well over a year ago, and the majority feeling was so what?

This is old news about this program it has been on several message boards 2 years ago, and nobody was up in arms then, and should not be up in arms about it now

Maybe nothing to you. That is fine,, is your opinion.

However I know lots of folks that this is still a big deal and not a good one.

And if other threads don't drift too... I am a multi millionaire!

I have not seen anything about the NSIA on this board. Maybe I missed it.

Two years ago most folks I know did not know about it at all. Only this year folks are getting a heads up. Only reason I know of it is because of the Fed Vet.

Wonder why the NSIA did not state what they were going to do on the News years ago? Other than being sneeky about it, so why don't they just tell the public in commericals or news casts?

No, GMO's are prohibited under 205.105 & 205.102. Both OMRI and IFOAM list them as prohibited as well. I really don't see this changing, as it would kill the U.S. organic export market.

I think I remember the situation you may be referring to. Some soybean growers wanted the OK to use GMO seed, or produce organic soybeans in close proximity to a GMO producer, something along that line, and wanted to maintain their organic status. The NOSB said 'no way'.

I don't know if it's producers certified by OT that you've talked to or a certifier from OT, but a USDA accredited Certifying Agent may not change the standards or hold producers to a different standard than the Organic Food Production Act. A producer can adhere to higher standards if they so choose; as long as they comply with the federal law, it wouldn't affect their certification.

Oh Good,, that is wonderful to hear.

Think I will have to talk to the office that sends me the news letters. Need to get the updated ones.

Thank you.

If you an organic producer, or interested in becoming one, I would also subscribe to OMRI. In fact, check with your certifier, if you are certified, and you might be able to get an OMRI book free; our state gave them to all our producers this year. I believe their website is OMRI.org. If that's not it let me know and I'll dig around.

I was up in WA.. but am not down here. Is maybe why I did not get the latest news letter. They do know I moved.

I still run this place like I did the old farm (per Oregon Tilth for my health). Not sure I want to get into raising animals or produce for selling to people any more. Will see. But I do like to keep up on things.

My vet friend is selling his practice in Texas and coming back to his Grandfather's farm this spring and go into Organic milking~! He did this a few years ago, but now is not only going to do organic milk but is also going to do Organic Cheese Curds..And with Organic milk selling 6 dollars higher the regular dairy farms he can make out pretty good with milking around 50 head of cows.

We also have an organic market place now in town that sells not only organic milk, but cheese curds, ham turkey or even a 1/2 gal of organic cream at 13 dollars a bottle~!! So my vet friend has an outlet to sell his product not only here in town but we are just about an hour away from Minn~! So another outlet for organic products.

And living a mile away I will also be helping him at the farm somewhat..I did help him milk a few years ago when he also did organic milking... Now with less cows it will be somewhat easier as he does Pasture Rotation/grazing...aNot just turned out on a 200 acre field~! And now this farm is over 15 years without any chemicals on it so he can get Certified quite easy, and being a vet he has all his records from years past on this land.

You should ask him if he is willing to start a Organic "Sheep" Cheese operation.

The stuff from Europe is really spendy.

We were "gifted" with a lot of junk on this place. We need to be able to afford to get it removed before I can have soil testing done on the new farm. So it will be awhile. I love the new Farm and won't want it any other way. But starting over getting Certified is going to be a lot of work.

Until then,, will keep to the rules of the Oregon Tilth..just for the family.

We are "hopefully" going to get the very old Farm tractor from DH old family Farm this week. That will help us a lot in the clean up.

I do know a few farms very close to me that do sheep~! And a few that milk goats more of the goat milking farms though then sheep milking..

And I raise my own steers and starting with milk replacer I don't get ANY that are medicated, no milk replacer, no sweet feeds...And now I have my own recipe for mixing feed so Just as soon as I get another calf, and this should be within weeks, I will have my own feed stuffs mixed up~!

Lucky I am only 8 miles from a feed mill that still mixes feeds eh?

Well for now I am raising natural grassfed lamb.......first organic will require a few years of records ,

.......second we are in a mosquito spray area.......third it is an expense I cannot afford right now...fourth there is no current proven good effective strategy for dealing with parasites........

So although we are slowly doing everything as organically as possible it will take time to switch to actual certification.

Maybe by the time we are ready the sheep will be making some money to pay for their certification

Oh and a sheep dairy was one idea that floated into my mind...until hubby threatened to knock it out of there
