barack obama has purchased a half-hour of airtime on cbs, sources confirm.

The obama campaign will air a half-hour primetime special on wednesday, oct. 29, at 8 p.m.

Sources say the obama camp is also in talks with nbc and fox. Nbc is said to be very near a deal. With fox, the matter is likely to remain uncertain as the time period could conflict with game 6 of the world series.

A cbs spokesperson declined comment. The buy will push comedy "the new adventures of old christine" to 8:30 p.m. And pre-empt "gary unmarried."

the direct purchase of such a large block of national airtime right before an election used to be more commonplace before campaigns began to focus their end game strategies exclusively on battleground states. Such a move is not without precedent in modern presidential politics, however -- ross perot did a similar purchase in 1992.

This year has seen the first time in many years that presidential campaigns have bought national broadcast tv advertisements. In the past 12 years, much of the billions of dollars in political advertising spent has gone to local tv stations in battleground states. While some money has gone to national cable channels, the thinking has always been that it would be more prudent to target battleground states' voters instead of addressing the entire nation, including states that reliably vote for one party or another.

The first instance was in august, when obama spent $5 million and mccain spent $6 million, each to advertise in nbc's coverage of the summer olympics from beijing. The networks' evening newscasts have also seen campaign ads for the first time in years. Before that, the last nationally broadcast campaign ad ran in the 1996 campaign.

The obama campaign earlier this year opted out of the public financing system, which meant that it was free to raise and spend as much as it could. It has, in states like michigan, outspent the publicly financed mccain campaign by a margin of at least 3-to-1.

It's not unprecedented for a candidate to buy longform broadcast network time, though it hasn't happened in a while. In october 1992, perot drew audiences of 16.5 million and 10.5 million for 30-minute lectures/campaign ad aimed at voters. But in perot's second run in 1996, the candidate was rebuffed by the big four networks in an attempt to sell airtime. The fcc backed the networks in denying perot airtime, saying that they acted legally in refusing.

Earlier this year, the hillary clinton campaign bought time on the hallmark channel, a nearly fully distributed cable channel, for a town-hall meeting before super tuesday.

Obama has run many 30-second spots across the country, and one two-minute spot that was particularly effective among experts where obama directly faced the camera and spoke to viewers about being able to feel their economic pain.

Oh count me in as well. It amazes me that the very people who condem him, wont actually sit and LISTEN to him. I have been watching several news sources and even though I wont vote McCain, I still watch him, just in case he reverts to the man he was 3 years ago.

I have sat down and made myself watch NObama speak. It is so dificult to watch him stutter and stammer through a speech I cannot do it anymore so I have to go later and read what he said. I also have a great amount of difficulty watching his anger rise as he speaks. He just seems to have so much anger in him and it comes out every time he speaks. This is something that I feel there is a true issue with as a President or any ruler of any country should be in control of their anger and not have their anger control them.

Just my own opinion from watching him speak.

I love to hear him speak.
As did a lot of people like to hear Jim Jones speak.

For those of you that don't want to follow the link I have included here is a quote:

["No one, other than Jim Jones – founder of the People's Temple, has captivated crowds like Obama. This has nothing to do with the 'Kool-Aid' party Jones foisted on his people. Watch footage of his sermons at the People's Temple, while in San Francisco. Same crying, passing out, etc."]

This has bothered me since the first time I heard Obama speak. I live in California and lived here during Jim Jones rise to popularity. If you think the list of Obama supporters provided on this list was impressive you should have seen the list of promiment people that supported Jim Jones.

Sorry, one of the curses of being old and having lived through too much history.

Minimama-From most of what I've seen, Obama's a fairly calm man. I'm having trouble thinking of examples of the sort of speaking you're talking about. Do you have some examples?

There are times when I've seen Obama get animated and every frustrated, but outright anger isn't something I've really seen.

Great point, Neil. Hitler was also a very charismatic speaker.

Obama does have a great way with a crowd. Very smooth (in time, we may say slick) and casual. Others who are great with crowds include people who are infomercial spokesmen, televangelists, and tv talk show hosts. Doesn't mean they'd be good National leaders.

I will not be tuning into the Obama Show on the 29th. (I wonder if Oprah's producing it?) I'll admit though back in the day when this was done for the first time, I did watch good old Ross Perot.

Neil So True

As far a Obama speaking, I feel like he is doing more preaching than just talking to the people. Like he is trying to brain wash the people. Oh ya I have seen him upset and have that discussed look on his face when McCain starts saying how he is wrong and thats not a good thing. When Obama attacks McCain, McCain just smiles and tells how he feels about what Obama just said.

I have yet to see McCain get mad or upset. Thats the difference between a seasoned person and the green horn Obama.

During the debates I have been waiting for Obama to just explode with anger and show the other side of him. Wether he does or not he sure isn't getting my vote.

What a waste of money. I would be more impressed if he used the money to help a lot of people going into foreclosure pay enough to get caught up and/or negotiate on a refinance to help someone save their home. It would get him more votes too. I wish they would actually start to change things and to turn things around one person at a time. Think how much good he could have done with that money. I hate his canned speeches that say the same old thing.

LOL Neil, I hear you.

I think Obama is a pretty polished speaker actually....but we aren't just electing an orator, we are electing someone who will be expected to follow through and exercise wisdom and good judgement. Maybe we are just in such an age of "celebrity" that it now extends to political office as well. Gee, Bill Clinton was a persuasive speaker and likeable guy, and look how well that turned out...

I'll watch Obama if I can - there is a real possibility he will be our president - frightening possibility - and we all need to be educated to what he really stands for.

Actions speak louder than words. I look at his voting record which is NOT impressive at all. If he can't do the job he was elected to do, how in the world is he going to be president. I also look at who he surrounds himself with. My grandmother always told me "If you mess with sh*t, you're gonna get it on you". People like that can talk almost anyone into anything. I really fear for our country if this man is elected. There are too many things about him that just don't add up.

John McCain may not be the perfect person for the job, but at least we know where his loyalty is. I believe he loves this country and wants the best for it and everyone in it. I don't believe that of Obama.

. How do you explain the women fainting (mentioned in the article) at Hillary Clinton rally? This I would like to hear, who do you liken her to?

I guess the possibility of perhaps heat, lack of air, standing for hours, just doesn't make sense at all?

Interesing, I thought that of McCain the other night, during his debate of constantly using the words "my friends...."my friends.... "my friends..." like a broken record

" over and over and over. That reminded me of all of the above you mentioned.

Very well said Janis. My sentiments exactly.

Folks, we are living in the electronic age. Obama's got a website. There some stuff on it. You don't like that? Go look at FactCheck or OnTheIssues. There's no excuse for anyone to 'not know' what someone stands for except the choice to not educate yourself.

Of course most of those things aren't going to battle unfounded fear. That's for you to deal with, and if you're truly worried what's going to happen with Obama in office I recommend signing yourself up for some therapy or a support group or something else. By the polls, by all the likely projections, Obama's going to be our next president.

That may be what I do after November, but right now I recommend VOTING as the most proactive therapy.

I just atributed it to women being women. But that will probably get me in trouble with this group.

Is there a tongue in cheek smilly here?

Voting is very good therapy! I'm going to vote extra hard this year, if it's possible. I'm also going to see about working at the polls this year.

Anyone can have a website and put anything they want on it. How can you really know what Obama stands for? He's not voted enough in the Senate to really know what he's for or against. He doesn't have much of a track record at all.

If you honestly believe that Obama has enough experience in politics to do the most difficult job in the country, you believe EVERYTHING that he says and you honestly don't have any questions or reservations about him, then, by all means, vote for him.

I do not believe that he has enough experience and I have MANY reservations about him. My gut tells me that there's something very wrong about this guy and I don't think he has our best interests at heart. Again, actions speak louder than words.

God help us all make the right decision!
