Obstical Class

I'm thinking about doing obstical with my gelding next season and he knows the basics, but what are some things you would find in obstical? I know theres sidepassing, backing, trotting poles, walking over tarps ect. But is there anything else you can think of? Thanks!

I think the hardest thing is the backing up that is not straight. A class I saw last year was straight backing between poles on the ground for about 3 feet, then over to one side a foot and back for 3 more feet. I can't remember if anyone was able to do it perfectly. That was an amateur class.

Unfortunatley, I did not get to attempt this with my horse as I was disqualified for not entering the class between the entrance cones!!! So watch out!!

-opening and closing a mail box

- Stoping to put a rain coat on walk a while and then take it off

-Opening and closing an umbrella

When i went to a show i saw backing a figure 8, ground tie, small jumps, having them step in a hula hoop and bringing it over the horses body.

I design them for my club. Make sure your horse can ground tie anywhere and on anything. I've had them ground tie on tarps, back feet (or front) in a hoola hoop or between two trot poles. You horse needs to learn to stay in that position until you ask them to move. Did a great teeter totter bridge at the last show.

Anything and everything you can think of... think outside the box. I have seen some pretty tricky stuff, makes it interesting.

I've also seen it where your horse has to trot to a certain point carrying two bags (with a rope attatched) of cans on their back. Or a string of sleigh bells on their back. Scary stuff!

we love obstacle class! Our horses have seen and done everything

listed above. At a show a couple weekends ago, they had a large

rubber feed dish. The object was to walk the horse up to it, have them

step both front feet into it, and ask horse to do a three sixty turn keeping

feet in bucket- and of course you don't touch the horse!

And don't just practise side passing along a straight pole, at one show the

sidepass pole was a semi circle shape.
