A couple of years ago after we used our pumpkins from Halloween I took them and just trashed them on the off side of the property where I sometimes dump the horse manure....this was in the fall. I did'nt even give it a second thought and then one day in the spring I happened to be walking around that area and saw this beautiful huge trumpet like orangish yellow flower and this viney type of plant...well low and behold it was a pumpkin plant!! :aktion033: Boy was I surprised! I watered it and nurtured it.....until one day my neighbor decided to do me a favor and with his tractor, trimmed that side of our property so I would'nt have to!

: That was the end of my pumpkin plant.

Fast forward to this year. I had a perfect spot picked out and put down some manure, dumped the pumpkins down in the spot and just thought all I had to do was wait for the spring to see my beautiful pumpkin plants come up. Well.....the squirrels had another plan for the pumpkin seeds. They not only had Christmas dinner, but New Years as well. I even tried burying them last year and the little bug-ers dug them up and hauled them away!

: I don't think I'm meant to grow a simple pumpkin patch. Is there a trick to it?

If you like to get rid of the squirrels , you can try peperment oil around the places that you don't want them get in to things.

Now Cheyenne, you know squirrels have to eat, too.

They were just adding some variety to their diet, you know

keeping their cholesterol down and such. Bet they were yummy!

Try planting them in the spring when the ground is warmer and

the squirrels have more food choices????

I'm with Geese- Squirrel and Pumpkin pie, then plant the seeds. Squirrels do NOT have to eat, as far as I am concerned. In fact, I'll parcel them up and you can have them ALL back.

Short of that, lets just say I cried no tears when the bl**dy things ripped open a few sachets of my rat poison and helped themselves!!!

Shain can plink a squirrel from a long ways, wanna borrow him?

I never tried the peppermint oil...but it's worth giving a try! I guess I will have to wait till spring and try it again. Then I'll add the peppermint oil around the area. Oh where would I get such an oil?

Hay Deb, send Shane over!!

: LOL !!!

The squirrels can be a problem around the area because they find their way (or chew their way) into the eves of the houses and get into the insulation and wires, causing blackouts and things. My folks had their phone lines go down for a few days and when the phone company found and fixed the problem, it had been squirrels that had gotten into the phone box, chewed the wires to build their nest in it.

Oh, I can't believe you people would kill a little squirrel

How mean

I raise and breed champion squirrels with wonderful bloodlines.

Here is one of my newest babies-

and Rabbit- shame on you!!! When you use poison for the rats they die and then the animals that prey on them get sick and then the carcasses rot and go into the ground and more animals get sick and so on. You need to take better care of your Earth.

We have lots of squirrels in my area ... I leave peanuts out for them every day in the same spot, and honestly, I've found they leave my seeds alone - they go straight for the peanuts!

Hosscrazy,

You are right- it is so much easier to work with nature than against it. Weren't the squirrels here first?

Sandy I had no idea! That is the cutest face I've seen in a while....tell us more.

Nobody worries about squirrels in the south.

Everyone eats them.

Awww Sandy he is soooo cute! I didn't know people raise them and they even have bloodlines!

: I love squirrels even though they can be little devils.

No need to kill something just because it may be an inconvenience. Pretty telling about those who do though

I love squirrels but do understand your plite. If all else fails you can build a simple green house out of plastic sheeting and pvc pipe to set over your pumpkins.

On the other side of things you could always come get one of my dogs. Between my husky that kills anything she can catch and my little red rat hunter, nothing dares come on to my place. I always loved watching the squirrels and birds fight over the bird feeders. That all ended when the husky came to town! The squirrels moved out of dodge!

You should see my Dad, God bless him. He built a humane squirrel trap, which he sets out in his property and each time he catches one he takes a trip out to the wooded lake where he rehomes them. I remember Mom telling me once last summer he made about 5 trips to the lake with a family of squirrels. Looked to be the mom, dad and 3 siblings. He did mention that daddy squirrel was not too thrilled about the ride and spit and growled the whole drive up there.

Oh, yes, my squirrels are know nation-wide and 2 made it to Nationals this year. You have probably heard of them- Mountain View's Nuts to You and Mountain View's Running In Circles.

They are very easy to train and delightful as pets.

Here's a couple more photos.

Oh my gosh they are so cute!

We've got those flying squirrels around here too.

I think they are called Sugar Gliders.

They're all over the place up here. It's funny to watch them go zoooooooommmmmmmm

Ok Sandy..for real? Or are you pulling my leg? Seems I remember a story of you rescueing a family of babies? Maybe not you but if you're kidding it's really a good one! :aktion033:
