I'll have to go a bit steady here as "lead line" to you obviously means a bit of fun, whilst over here it is a show class equal to the best, and classes go right up to the Royal, International and Horse of the Year Show so it really is very high powered and you would not get int the ring with no stirrups etc.

Basically, the saddle and bridle do not fit the pony. The saddle is OK- it is just too big for the Pony- not mentioning Loren. Next year Loren may well have grown but the Pony will not have done and the saddle will still be too big.

The bridle is an issue though, the saddle will do no harm but the bridle needs to be altered. If it cannot be adjusted then you need to get it altered by a saddler or buy another. The bit should be a lot higher in the mouth.

If you got a noseband for it you would not need a halter- over here all lead reins must be attached to the noseband- they are NOT for control they are merely a safety line, to be used in emergency.

I never needed to touch mine, and our little one was minute- she looked like a fairy child, up there on her 34" Mini Mare!!!

I would strongly recommend a helmet- you can get a black one with a peak and it will look fine with western gear.

If you are going to use the over the pommel stirrups I would take off the saddle stirrups so there are only the one set- could you not get a saddler to shorten the saddle stirrups for you, it would look so much neater.

Even at this level, although the class will be about safety, it will also be about the general look of the exhibit- so the first look as you come into the ring counts for a lot.

I am presuming you will just walk round??

I ask as at this level we were expected to be able to trot and give an individual show!!!

Allrighty everyone, I am off to the tack store today. I got Slick a very nice "B" show halter that was plane rolled leather, but it was WAY too big. So I am taking it back. I put holes in the headstall and we will see how it fits, but I might just get one that matches better. I can't take the stirups off the saddle because they are on there so good I would never be able to get them back on. I am also not going to cut them so they go through because I am not going to ruin them as next year his legs will fit just fine. The halter he has under the headstall in the pictures is old and ratty, yes, but it will not be going to any show with us!! I have been looking for a new one for him but always forget to bring his old one to compair. I have brought back 2 halters so far. He is a 35 inch "B" with an "A" head!!

So, my basic goal is to look clean and like we are having fun. I am not out to compete and win, although in the future, winning would be nice. :aktion033:

I will post more pictures when we have out stuff together and discuss this again!!

Thanks everyone!!!

How about a hlater like this? This is an e-bay halter, but it is for a mini foal. It was the only western style one I found. Anyone know where I can get one for Slick?

Jeffers I think still has a leather western halter for Miniatures. I cant remember if it had the silver bars or silver hearts on it. I have one for my big horses it has the silver hearts on it. It comes with a matching lead and it cost me approx. $30.00. I think the ones for the miniatures were the same price...

Yes that is the nice kind of show halter that you need.

But don't combine gold and silver like if you have silver on the saddle and bridle, you don't want gold on the halter.

You put the bridle on the horse. Be sure it's fitted properly.

Then you bring the show halter up on top of the bridle. Not under.

You bring your reins through the halter and up to his hands.

You then bring your lead with the chain through the bottom middle ring of the halter, draw it through, and hook it so it's doubled up. You don't want a lot of chain hanging and flopping around. Then, your lead comes through the bottom in the middle of the reins to your hand. Never clip a lead to a bit. A judge will see that is improper use of tack and knock you down for it in a minute if he knows how to judge a leadline class. You do need a saddle to fit your child properly and the horse both, because again, that is all part of it.

I'm trying to get my scanner to work so I can show you close ups.

For leadline, they will be "led" at both a walk and trot. the chold should be the one actually controlling the horse/pony, but they are on a lead.

We do have "Walk-trot" classes as well, where the child enters alone as in any other class, but is only required to walk, and trot. There are different levels of course, depending on the child's, maturity, training and time in saddle. Heck, I know one little girl who used to cool out her Mom's Warmblood jumper at the age of three. Not something I would have felt comfortable with...but it worked for them.

If you are going to show at an amhr show do not put a halter over or under your bridle. You can use just a cavason if you must but no one uses both a halter and a bridle. If you need mini show supplies or have any questions for a mom that does leadline with her kids in the mini shows contact Kathy Waxler at Star Lake . She had Kasey showing when she was less than 2. She will give you correct answers and also good prices on what you need. Most of the people on this board dont show much... Laura can also tell you what she did wit Mia.... Kathy is closest to you for odering things as well as giving excellent advice.... better than we here can give. I will follow what is going on because we are planning to have Robby show at the fair this year in leadline.

ps Marty your boys are tooooo adorably handsome! Nice turnout.

Well, I looked and looked and found nothing for minis but nylon.

Any other ideas?

Yes, Loren and I have to work on trotting and holding the reins. He has trotted before, but only when the horse he was on "Escaped" while I was taking pictures!! :new_shocked:

I have not ever seen a trot called for in the mini shows in leadline either.

I have pm'd Laura, a momma whose been there doing that to come and answer the questions here. Id rather be happy than be right.... as Dr Phil would say so.... Im not going to contradict anyone anymore on the thread...... Hopefully Laura will come and help.

Leadline Pleasure is at a walk-trot

Leadline Equitatioin is at a walk

AMHR doesnt have that distinction.

Since you've already got lots of stuff to think about LOL, I thought I would add some short and simple advice. Like someone already mentioned it doesn't look good to knot the reins and it is not easy to find a pair of romel reins in pony size, so what I do to get a polished look, yet keep the safety factor....I pick the spot where the child will hold the reins (you want a spot where the child is able to have his /her hand slightly out ahead of and centered with their waist and far enough back on the rein to allow for a slight drape of the rein) Then I take a piece of electrical tape and wrap a couple times around the reins. You get the appearance of a split rein, but if a horse should jump or shy for any reason, the child doesn't loose the reins. It has worked well for us and it also gives the child a guide to know where to place his hand for proper rein drape. I always try to get my boys to use soft hands, but they use soft fingers too and the reins forever need to be adjusted if I don't give them a mark LOL. Good luck and most of all have fun. Safety first, fun second, competitive spirit will surely follow :saludando:

OK everybody, the reins are not an issue. I just tied them so that Slick would keep his head up and not eat for the pictures.

Also, this is an open show I am going to and it said they have to walk and trot both ways. BUT if Loren is not comfortable at the trot I will not do it. I am sure they won't kick me out of the class for it.

Which open show in NH are you going to? We showed for several years with Courtney riding my road gelding in leadline. She beat all the big "professionally" trained leadliners. I actually might have some stuff left over that you could use. Linda B

That would be great!! It is at the deerfield fairgrounds on May 13th. It is with the NH horse and trail assoc.

PM me with what you have please!! :aktion033:

My advice was aimed at the safety factor. As I said in the reply, someone had already mentioned the looks. Safety is always a top priority for me but since the advice was unwanted I'll keep my mouth shut. You'd think I'd know better than to bother posting anyway.

I agree about the safty factor too. I hope I didn't make you feel I didn't want your comments. That was not my intent. I am sorry.
