My dog just got diagnosed with some type of oral cancer. He is pretty old, turns 14 this month. We noticed that his mouth was swollen and I thought it was possibly because of the hard food he was eatting. My mom put in a appointment just incase. We found this out today. Also his artiritis is much worse and is going down hill really fast. She was going help to do something with his mouth, by putting him under but she didnt want to do too put him down too much or it might kill him. Luckly its not spread to his chest.

Here is my question. We had him over there like 3 weeks ago just to get a dental checkup. Nothing wrong or this doctor didnt tell us anything. Is oral cancer fast acting? We are kind of irritated and we won't use this doctor again, even when they came home last time this same dog was bleeding in his mouth and was eating so uncomfortably after that.

It is extremely fast.....I am so sorry...my friend's standard poodle got that from the time we noticed a strange bump in his mouth which grew daily to being put down was less than 3 weeks

she thought the same thing something had irritated his mouth...it was a tumor and removing this type of tumor often makes it spread faster.......the dog quit eating and that was what determined "his" time to go.........

Thanks! Thats all I wanted to hear. Cause if that vet missed something because "they only check one side" than I would have been irritated. This dog has had a hard life. When he was younger him and his brother went off and he got caught in a chicken coop and got shot at and his leg had to be taken off (sorry couldnt spell the right word), than severe arthritis and now this. I had a feeling he didnt have much longer but not because of something like this

I am so sorry.......I lost my chow to stomach cancer and didn't know she had it.....took her to the vet they did an ultrasound that wasn't real conclusive so I told them to do exploratory surgery (we were hoping she had a blockage a sock or something) he called once she was open there was nothing to be done.......he put her down and I never got to say goodbye she was all alone none of us were there........and that has crushed me for years

The only "good " thing about it is it is painless. Even if this form of cancer spreads, and it often does, it is still painless. I had a cat with it and she was young so I had it removed once and it did not come back for five years, then it came back and spread in a few weeks. I figured it was her time, that time, so I let her go.

I'm so sorry. Sounds like that old boy has been through a lot in his life. Bless his heart.

My sister had a dog with cancer in her mouth, and yes, it was very aggressive. Interesting, she also first noticed something wrong shortly after a dental. She's a tech and did most of the dental herself, so it wasn't missed initially.

Cancer in dogs seems to be more and more prevalent. They sure don't deserve such an illness.
