Well my husband came home from work. I was in the barn, he let our border collie outside, we usually tie him but hubby was on porch watching him. We have done this in the past with no problems, anyway our border collie took off on a dead run down the middle of the street. My husband followed him to town, about 3 miles away and lost him. He is out looking for him. I hope he finds him safe and sound as the plows are going like crazy up and down the roads as it is snowing out.

This has happened to me a couple of times and it's not fun. I would get as many friends and family as I could and patrol the streets. If they can't help by driving around have them be on the look out. The last time this happened to me my dog came back and went to into the neighbors garage.

I really hope you find your dog soon!

Still no dog, hubby came home empty handed but we have spread the word around, stopped the plow and told the driver who will pass the word on to the other plow driver. This is the second time Rusty has done this but the other time was during the day in the summer and our mail man found him. My husband looked in all the ditches and no dead dog so that is a good sign. Hopefully someone picked him up. He has been gone since 5p.m.

Just remember not to scold your dog when he returns in any way, ever, no matter what. Starting when he comes home this time, make the experience of coming to you the best, most captivating and rewarding thing in the world. When letting him out in the future, keep a long line on him and work on your recalls DAILY in a way that you can ALWAYS get him to come to you after a single "Come!" for whatever thrills him. For now I'll be keeping him in my thoughts, hoping this time won't be the time that recall was needed to save his life...

I hope your doggie comes home soon. Christmas wishes.

Have you found your Collie yet? Maybe he'll be on your porch in the morning, I hope so!

4a.m here, can't sleep, still no Rusty.

Also he wasn't fed last night as we feed him just before we go to bed. He sleeps in our room, has his own bed. Our little dog, Teddy, keeps looking for him. Usually he comes when called but this time my husband said he totally ignored him and just ran down the road.

7:30a.m now, still no Rusty. Hubby is in barn milking the cows. I've fed my horses already. Afterwards we are going to look for Rusty. What a christmas. At 9:30a.m we are supposed to be at my hubbys' brothers place, then afterwards are supposed to go to my parents place. I just hope Rusty is alright.

Shana,

Tomorrow your local newspaper should be open. I would put an ad in with a picture of your dog. Also check your vet's office or any dog boarding businesses. I live in PA and once while on vacation my dogs got out of their kennels and ran down the road. A man from out of town put them in his car and tried to call me. My phone number was monogrammed on their collars but I was gone 1,000 miles away. He ended up taking them to the local vet and they boarded them overnight until my dad picked could pick them up.

I'm praying you find your border collie today!

If Rusty doesn't show up TODAY, TOMORROW you need to follow through on putting an ad in the paper, contacting the vets and VISITING the local shelters (not all employees can properly identify dogs), as well as contacting shelters out of your area where a traveler might have taken him. Do a check on PetFinder.com and also put in calls to the area rescues. If possible, fax these places a page with a picture of and information about Rusty. Finally, I suggest you take a clear picture of Rusty and write a big, bold LOST DOG with description message including REWARD to have made into 12" X 24" yard signs that you can picket (not just tape to poles) throughout town. Doing all this may cost $100. or so, and you will have to work fast as these first few days are critical in lost dog situations...
