The second Pacific Celebrity foal was born this week. As his dam took 359 days to allow us to see him, we were able to collect a dna hair sample in 24 hours and send it in. We are just facinated by what Celebrity is producing.

This is the sire Celebrity:

This is his first foal, a smokey cream splashed white overo pinto with two blue eyes. He tested homozygous for black and cream. Negative for frame and sabino. High white and belly white. He is the color of coffee ice cream. Very cool color!

Here is the second foal born this week. He tested black sabino overo pinto, homozygous for black. Negative for frame. We have only had two foals born this color and both tested non silver, including these foals sire Celebrity. The black darkens considerably over time.

Left eye is blue. No cream.

Both foals have wide blazes, four white on legs, and color that goes around their eyes.

I am dying to clip both these foals out and see where all their white is.

Just one more foal due from Celebrity this year.

You can see the problem of splashed white vs sabino with these two. I do wish there was a splashed white test!!

They are both beautiful, and what interesting color results from the tests! The first one almost appears champagne in color. I hope you will post pictures when they're clipped to compare with the fuzzy pics.

Your posts are wonderful education tools for learning about genetics, and the various coat colors. Thanks!

Very pretty foals, Joanne.

I would say that, since the Sabino test only tests for Sab1, that you have Splash and Sabino in both colts, the second one for sure, but I actually think both are a combination pattern.

What were the dams??

I always like to give the mares credit, after all, all the stallion contributes is a few genes and five minutes of his time!

Congratulations on the colts! I too think both foals are carrying Sabino and likely Splash as well. I do think that if you test the second colt for silver, he may turn up positive. I don't think he is black, not just because of his lighter coat color, but he also has the light eyelashes which has always seemed to be a pretty good indicator on horses that carry silver.

Nope, no silver. Sire tests negative. Dams do not carry it either.

I would have said the same thing years ago, but now I know that the sabino gene can look like silver when they are young.

Here are the dams as requested:

This is Pacific China Blue. She is a smoky black, negative for champagne. She had blue eyes at birth that turned amber. She is the dam of the first double cream and homozygous for black foal. Her color has always intrigued me.

This is Blossom, the dam of the black sabino colt. She has small 2-3 inch patches of white along her center belly, and white socks. Thoughts on pattern genetics? Sabino vs splashed white ?? Tests neg for frame and sabino (sb1).

I would say that Celebrity is a visual splash which accounts for the patterns of the colts. I would say the second mare also carries splash.

I also feel the second foal is a Black Sabino. The coloring looks just like a little filly I have last week. She was born looking very dark...so I assumed she would be black. Well, after she dried out, of course she looked lighter, as most blacks do in their foal fuzzies. But, she is a LOT lighter than any other blacks I've had. I entertained the idea she may be Silver Black as I believe her dam may be carrying silver. Her sire (Hemlock Brooks Cock Robin) carried silver, as well as her full brother (Kickapoo's Nickelodeon). AND, her eyelashes are white, which was the first thing that got me thinking she may actually be a Silver Black. I've inspected the filly very closely to see if her mane is coming in light. I can see some "traces" of lighter hairs....but scattered thru the dark gray mane, not all hairs growing in light at the roots like you would expect a Silver to do.

But, after much deliberation, I feel she is a Black Sabino, and the Sabino gene is what is making her look lighter. Her hair on her body and legs is much darker close to the skin. Not black, but much darker. A Silver black foal normally would have lighter gray hair close to the skin.

Here are a couple of her newborn photos.

And here is "Kickapoo's Apache Moonglow" after she dried out. She almost appears to be the color of a Silver Black foal....but I don't think so. Even with the white eyelashes, I think she is actually a Black Sabino, as both her parents carry Sabino. Looks a lot like the coloring of the original poster's 2nd foal.

WOW, that is really something that neither of the parents to the second foal carry silver. Those white eyelashes really threw me!

When you have white that close to the eyes, white eyelashes are common.

Dona that is a beautiful black sabino filly.

These sabino foals are so versitile in a breeding program. They the jagged unique markings, and that facial white!

Crossed with either frames or tobiano pintos = heaven !
