I have a Senegal parrot and she has been drinking lots of water lately. Seems healthy otherwise, well stools may be a bit watery but with the water she is drinking that doesn’t surprise me. Oh and a little fluffy but not bad. I put up a heat lamp and she seems to like it. Her appetite is real good, as a matter of fact she is eating some wheat bread right now and I know for a fact she has eaten apple and some granola and some chicken today and of course her regular seeds. Puts her head down for scratches like always. I had been thinking that she was splashing her water out but today I made a point to really watch her so I know she is drinking it.

Anyone ever had a parrot start drinking lots of water? Wonder if birds can get diabetes?

I have had birds all of my adult life ( not to date my self here - but 25 some years. ) I have to admitt that I have no idea if birds can get diabetes. It sounds like your bird is getting a varied diet - that's good and as long as you provide fresh water and spray baths in the warmer monthes, your bird should do fine. OFCOURSE I AM NO VET!! PM me if you would like...

Are you sure she is a She? If you are, is she going to start laying?? You really need to get a Vet who knows about birds, but I realise this is probably not going to happen, Sooo.... go on-line and find a Parrot Forum and ask them the same question. I would bet she is coming on to lay, and I think you need to discourage her, they can get very temperamental, especially as there is no chance of the eggs hatching. You do need expert advice on this, though.

Hi Jo~,

Yes, Bird can get diabetes, I lost one to it, I still miss her terribly!

It sounds like she has a good appetite, and is not sitting on the bottom of the cage fluffed up, and you are watching her droppings, all of which is good, but it wouldn't hurt to have an avian vet take a look at her, they go downhill so very fast.

It could be also, that this time of year it starts getting much drier in the house, and she is making up for the lost humidity by drinking more water - do you have a humidifier that you could turn on to see if that helps?

Please keep us posted??

Yap she is a she. Had her checked a few years ago when silly me thought she would like a mate, she hated the male and about killed him

sold him. Her name is Mary and she hates everyone except me. I also think everyone hates her except me

Hopefully its not diabetes, I don't think its lack of humidity, its 62% in our house right now. We have trouble with humidity and are always fighting it so things don't get moldy. We live where it rains a lot

Mary isn't drinking so much today and she is still eating real good and acting pretty normal. Maybe having the heat lamp over her cage last night and still on now is helping. I think I will go to town and get some type of antibioctic for her water just to be on the safe side.

Just a suggestion if you do the antibiotics follow it with a probiotic or some yogurt....the birds have the same issue as we or horses do.....kill off all the good along with the bad. I she finishing up a molt or possibly getting ready to lay? My conures often had kinda odd eating/drinking habits during stress .......maybe offer her cuttlebone, mineral block, lava rock (if she doesn't have these already) and maybe up her fresh greens spinach, mustard greens, kale, carrot tops, frozen mixed veggies defrosted are usually eaten with gusto, melon, berries.......these might increase the moisture in her diet and help reduce her water intake back to normal.....
