Was on my home from work (I'm about 20 miles from home) when my husband called to ask me if I knew who to call about 2 pitbulls. He works from home and heard commotion outside. He looked and saw 2 pitbull dogs running the fence(chainlink)line biting at the fence and my two minis running very excitedly.

He said they were friendly to him and were easy to catch (had collars but no tags) and we had a large crate/kennel so he put them in there. Husband drove around the area to see if anyone was looking for them but no luck.

Called the animal control folks and said they would be out possibly that same night. Well no show. I was so nervous about having them in my garage. But also felt bad for them as I knew what their probable demise would be. anyway we walked them, fed and watered them and they slept very peacefully.

Then next afternoon the animal control officer came and she took them away.

she told my husband that anytime in harris county it is lawful to shoot a dog that is a danger to livestock. Good to know this for the future.

I'm so very thankful that the horses were in the drylot and not out in the yard with only the board fence protecting them. We had given thoughts to replacing the chain link with matching board fence but now we are going to keep the chain link.

We have lived here for 6+ years and have never seen these 2 dogs. I believe someone just dropped them off.

Just wanted to share a good ending with you and something else I can be thankful for.

You were so lucky!!! And for future note for anyone else, I do believe it is legal EVERYWHERE to shoot to kill dogs that are endangering livestock. I have a neighbor who's dogs like to run our fence and harass the horses when they're turned out (which only occurs when we're home). I've made it clear more than once, if they so much as set a paw on my property they're dead. I don't miss. And for their part, they've been respectful of my concerns. If I turn the horses out they bring their dogs in. I put too much time and money into my horses as well as my clients' horses for some dog to ruin it. I apply the same rule to my own personal dogs - they chase a horse, that's it.

So far, I've been fortunate in my selection of canine companions.

There was an article in the paper the other day about 2 Pitt Bulls that killed a miniature horse in Manitoba, Canada sometime last week. This poor stallion must have gone through heck!

I’m not saying that every Pitt Bull is going to be mean, but come on there is a reason that they have been banned here for the past 15 years!

I don’t know what barn this stallion was at, but it he sure was a nice looking stallion so it must have been from some sort of a breeding/show barn. I want to offer my condolences to them on such a tragedy.

Dee, there's a huge thread on the Miniature Horses forum about that stallion. The owner has also come on with some replies. I think you'll find it very interesting reading, but not if you're into pit bull bashing.

My humble opinion is that could have been any breed of dog running the fence like that after your horses., mine would too if I left them to their own devices and allowed it. Your husband and you did the right thing for them and you were good to them. Hopefully their owners will come forward and re-claim them. It could have been just a case that they got loose and the owners didn't get ads posted yet. However, I'm glad this didn't end in tragedy for your animals. It could have ended up very differently so count your blessings and Give Thanks on Thursday.
