There is a serious hay shortage here in OK and hay brokers are trucking in hay from the north. I have an opportunity to buy a trailerload of brome hay this week but know nothing about it. Is it suitable hay for hroses? Is it something I wouldn't mind letting seeds loose in my native grass pasture?

Absolutely it is suitable for horses, and there is nothing wrong with brome seeds in your pasture--chances are the brome won't take over your native grasses anyway; here the brome seeded fields usually get taken over by the native prairie grass, and after a number of years all that is left is the prairie grass.

Anyway, brome is my grass hay of choice--I prefer it over anything else (except for maybe crested wheat that is cut at just the right time--that is one of the horses' favorites). Brome can get over ripe if it grows too fast/too tall or is cut very late in the season but generally it makes very nice hay.

I agree with everything Minimor said. Love brome hay, and so do the horses. Wish I could get more of it, we get more of the crested wheatgrass, and it tends to get put up late, so not as good as the brome. I don't think you could go wrong with brome hay.

I, too, am a big fan of brome hay!! We don't have it locally, but one of our hay guys trucks it in from Kansas.

Love it!

Can you PM me with info on where you can get some? Our fields did not grow due to the drought and we are looking for some to be trucked in. We are in NW KS

Thanks!

Brome grass hay is wonderful for horses. We redid our pasture ten years ago and planted brome grass - it takes a year or more to get established, but has a good root system that holds the soil. Brome grass is high in fiber and low in starch, perfect for grazing animals.

Here's an article on how to select the perfect brome grass hay Brome grass hay.

Hope you can get some!
