My stalls are roughly 6' x 12.5'. My stall mats are sized to cover my stalls all except the back 6". That is where the mares happen to pee.

I want to make a French Drain in that 6" strip at the back of the stalls.

I may eventually cut a strip of stallmat and place over that area, with the French Drain beneath it.

Right now, that area stays wet and smells bad.

What should I do?

If you are sure that is pee and not water coming in from outside, Jerry said to dig it down about a foot (unless it is by a footer), and add some 1/2 gravel and then cover it up with shavings.

We made a french drain by digging down about 3 feet and filling the area with gravel. Works very well and can even add lime if there is any smell. You may not have to dig down that far for a stall. Mary

Marty I am not sure what you mean by "footer"?

My stalls have a concrete channel that runs around the perimeter of the barn. Is that a footer?

We have thick rubber mats, but they just don't reach all the way to that last 6" space.

It is definitely pee....when I put a colt in the same stall, the problem moves with the mares that go pee at the very back of the stalls....put a boy in that stall and no more problem. LOL

Yes LL, that's a footer.

So just dig down beside it and add about a foot of gravel. Should be good to go then (((( ))))

Hi there,

A true French drain also has a perforated pipe buried under the gravel. Gravel /Perforated pipe /Gravel / then dirt.

..Can you hang their water/feed buckets in that area? This perhaps will not give them the room they feel they need to do their business & move forward some. I would try it before doing all of that work.............. We regulate where we want our horses to do their business by putting the bedding in the end of the stall that we prefer them to go.

I think you answered your own question about what you need to do. Putting in a curtain drain to take care of the problem of them peeing where there aren't mats is a lot of work that could be aleviated by just finishing out the mats in that area. That is what I would do.

I did what Kathi suggested in my mare barn. The stall mats in there didn't quite reach the back, so we just cut mats to fit. Now the whole stall area is matted.
